im waiting for AMD to come out with something that beats the c2d. That should make the current top of the line AMD CPUs prices to drop considerably. That will be the time when I upgrade with current top of the line AMD CPU

On tigerdirect they have an Athlon 3800+ (AM2 Socket) for about the same price as the P4.

That is the processor I would recommend. It will be quite a bit faster than the one you bought, but well cheaper than a Core2.

Yeah, Ranger, another alternative is going with an AMD 939 setup. A single core 939 + nice motherboard will run you $140 on newegg. Stepping up to a dual core CPU will add $60. Nice thing would be that you can use the ram you already got. Maybe even get the single core now and upgrade to dual core down the road. Would be a seemless upgrade requiring no OS reinstall or anything. That can't be much more expensive than your P4 option and it will run circles around it and you should be able to get a nice easy overclock out of it even with cheap memory.

See, that?s a good recommendation. Even though it?s one of the cheapest solutions for a Core 2 setup right now, this setup will easily OC to over 3Ghz+. Bearing in mind he already has DDR memory, so he would need to purchase some more RAM, maybe some PC2 6400 ram if he is looking to OC.

Surely there must be some bundles available, with similar hardware included?

The Prescott supported DDR2 800, I don't think there were any motherboards that suppoeded DDR although that may have changed - so chances are he already has DDR2 800 memory and depending on the memory it will probably be able to go faster then its rated speed. To really overclock, yea he would probably want some DDR2 1333 - but it sounds like hes a novice and may not want to overclock too much any way

Going by the OP, if he is correct in what he has said. He has already got 1GB?s worth of DDR ram. So he would need to get rid of this, as it is no good for any future upgrades.

Well, I know I should've researched before I bought, but I screwed up. I'm only 20, so I guess I'm allowed a few screwups to learn from. I've looked around, and I think for right now I'm gonna keep what I've ordered. I'm not really gonna lose much money, and I've gotta build a computer for my mother somewhere down the road. This way, I'll have some performance increases in the present, and I can take the time I need to research my options like I should've done in the first place. Once I find what I want, I can build that for me and use the stuff I just ordered for my mom's computer. All she'll need is internet and word processing. It's kinda a long way to go for the parts I would've had to buy sooner or later anyway, but I guess it'll work. Thanks everybody for your advice, and when I get ready to order my new parts, I'll let you know.
