i'm still rockin a PC from 2011. Intel Core i5 2500K Sandy Bridge. It runs every game I have just fine so i'm trying to find a reason to upgrade. Should I upgrade or keep this beast? Lol.

being an old timer here, you should know there is no reason to upgrade. the ideal upgrade is when the tech you have becomes obsolete; just wait until the day you find yourself thinking "man, this CPU is s***" and then get a new system. that's how you get the most out of an upgrade.

ofc new CPUs are outstanding. but the ratio of computing power to power demand has gone down; you would not feel the same "WOW" factor with a skylake build, for example.

same here, i've had a 2500k OC'd to 4.3ghz for the last 5 years, and haven't needed any more CPU power. the GPU has been upgraded a couple times though, as have the HDD/SSDs. also replaced the main monitor once.

i think i'll probably wait until 2017 to get a brand new machine.

CPU just isn't as important anymore. Or more accurately, the days when a new generation of CPUs rendered the previous generation obsolete has long passed. The massive changes occurred in the Pentium/K6-2 --->Core2/Athlon 64 X2 eras(approx).

Though I've gotten quite a bit more casual about my gaming, so I haven't been straining it much lately.

Funny you say that, I think mine is circa 2011. Built a Hackintosh with an i5, SSD, and 10 gigs of RAM or so and haven't really had to touch it ever since. Still super fast & does everything we need it to do...outside of DCC & gaming, I think we've kind of plateau'd in terms of having to upgrade all of the time to "go faster" because we've hit the "it's good enough" point.

Still have an X58 Asus P6T7 MOBO in here.

Never even have had the back plate or many things for the board, I bought it open box off the Egg when they were pretty new, and the board was all I received. Haven't had any problem with it really though over the years.

Finally ended up stopping at a X5680 @ 4.5 after yanking the old I-7 920 out, tested a few others getting there I guess.

Have added a couple SSD's for the OS and upped the RAM to 12, still cooks along pretty well.

Have upped the GPU once, but the MOBO has been in there a long time.

Core 2 quad 9650 w/8GB and a Asus 280X here. Runs games fine except Star Citizen. I'm waiting until Star Citizen matures more or I can get an affordable 4k monitor & video card to run it.
I see no reason for you to upgrade at this time. Plus aren't graphics cards shrinking to 14/16nm next year?

Yeah, my wife still uses one of my old 9650 gaming rigs and my sister in law a Q6600 SLCKR I'd built, both with a slight OC. One of the old HDD died in the Q6600 rig awhile back and stuck a newer SSD in there and she's been more than happy for messing around in general.

An Asus 280X was the last GPU I had bought myself in the main rig.

2500k armchair warriors unite !!! Still rocking my 2500k@4.1, but did upgrade from a GX580 to a 7970, then earlier this year moved to a 290x.

2500k@4.2 here, I did just go from a 480 to a 290x a few months ago though.
