I don't even find myself spending much time in the living room......home theater room would get minimal usage if any. Ok fine, for first week or 2....

That's why I want to build my own house. Open kitchen & family room with a TV set, since I'm usually either eating or chilling at home, and a dedicated home theater room for movies & games with family & friends. And maybe some bedrooms off to the side with a bathroom or two :awe:

Same goes with house size. Not saying I wouldn't like a beautiful, very large house. But I would spend 90% of my time in one little corner of it.

So you can either earn money by working like a dog or get lucky in the entertainment industry and have that money dropped in your lap.

The first way mentioned is a double-edged sword. YOU actually earn the money you make so you enjoy what you have more (in theory)....but the down side is you have less time to enjoy your material possessions.

The second way mentioned is a double-edged sword because you don't actually earn the money you make and you more or less take it for granted. This is the best when the money is wasted and the cash cow stops coming home. 😀 A lot of one time celebs, mostly in the music industry deal with this....but it can happen to anyone. Just ask Elizabeth Berkley!

eh, that's not true at all. i've never worked more than 40 hours a week in my ~9 year career in the software industry except maybe 3 or 4 times, and it was for the same company that i was only with for less than 2 years, but my salary has jumped tremendously.

i have just as much free time now as i did at the beginning of my career, if not more, because it's more laid back hour wise so i can have more daylight in a day depending how i've split up my time that week.

meh, you can finish a decent dedicated HT room for a few grand... it's not free, but it doesn't have to cost like 10-100K.

I like the ones that look like classy lounges with the big fireplace. I could see myself smoking a cigar and watching a movie with a single malt scotch (hold the ice please) in one of those

If only we actually watched that much tv. Would mostly be for show, which I am guessing is the case for most of the rich. These places would collect dust which they'd then hire maids to clean. 😉

I have a blank slate fully finished basement and I'm going to turn it into a hockey shooting gallery instead. 😉

Yeah....but you work in software. I'm talking about real, non-IT careers.

I've got a cousin that works for an oil company, essentially in administration. He makes serious bank, but puts in 45-50 hours a week....the rest of the time, his phone rings off the hook. He never answers calls....only voicemails.

We do not know these people have money, they could be filing bankruptcy. In fact i would bet more people without flashy houses and toy are rich than the flashy type who want to keep up with the Jones'.

This is the kind of set up that poor people get when they want to feel like going high-end:

And this guy clearly has great taste in movies.

You should move the DVD shelf out of the room if you can put it in another room. I did that and even though my movies are not on the same floor it does not annoy me. It would make your living room look better.

I'm hoping to actually eliminate it entirely here in the next few months. Probably just throw the DVD's away.

You should keep in mind that a lot of people who have nice HTs like that took quite a while to finish. Some people even a year or two.

There are lots of folks building on avsforum.

Many people acquire the expensive stuff as they go.

It's nice to have money, but people with THAT much money usually did something that created enemies. Rich people never seem to enjoy their money as much as you'd think for that reason.

Mine took 1.5 years. You don't think it will take that long but then time stretches and before you know it its been a year+

What those photos don't show you is the man behind the camera, a depraved and hopeless individual that can afford the world but can not find anything better to do but furnish the surroundings of his television set.

EDIT: Except for the second to last guy who is probably a heroin addict on account of his musical inclinations.

Is this your HT setup? 😛

lol tosh said that in one of his old specials that i caught on tv a couple weeks ago.

and yeah those are some really nice theater rooms. mine isn't at those levels, but it's my first house so i think it's not bad!

i wouldn't be surprised if mine sounded better than some of those though.

Wow, love it. If I had to nitpick the one issue I'd have (which I also have w/ my setup) - is getting the sound all calibrated for the middle seat which has no armrest or cup holder, so I'd prob be sitting to one side or the other where it's not centered/calibrated as well. But really, I hope to have a set up like that one day.

And actually after looking again, you wouldn't be that far off center...my set up is worse since the rear side speakers are close to the couch so I end up sitting right next to one of them

Those theater seats look nice, and I'm sure they are comfortable, but I'm don't think that's what I would put in. I don't really want to be sitting in the same position throughout a movie (it's ok in the theater but that's because you have no other choice). How do you cuddle? What if there is more than 3 people?

I'd install vacuum hoses on all theater seating I'd put into my house.
Toilet breaks will be a thing of the past!

If you DIY, most of the setups in the OP are achievable on a middle-class salary, while making no more enemies than usual. If you contract that stuff out, well, either you're making a lot of money or you're in a lot of debt. Or both.

The problem, of course, becomes hedonic adaptation...
