Went through this just now on a fresh Win 7 x64 install. I spent the ENTIRE weekend baby-sitting Windows Update (@#$%!!!). Once it was finally done with all "Important" updates, I enabled updates for other Microsoft products. Installed some stuff from the Windows Essentials package. More updates...

In the end, I had all recommended updates and most optional updates installed, but KB2952664 was not installed and not available to install. I had to download it via other means, then restarted and re-ran the assessment. Finally got the icon.
I wonder what the equivalent update for win 8 is..I've got all updates and even the launcher exe but I still can't get the icon.

rofl..there will be no iso...unless you pay full price!!
Yea there will, you will just need a key. You pay for the key not the iso anyway. You also have a year to upgrade once it is released. A month after its out they will have the windows 10 install media application for download just like they had for 7/8.

You can actually make an ISO from the current reservation files windows 8 downloads now with an esd file extractor. A little more work than usual but it can be done if you want one.

Did you run the CMD script from an elevated command prompt?
Yep let that run for ten minutes then it said success. I put a pause in the script when it succeeded loading whatever it needed otherwise it just goes in a loop. I see in /windows/system32/GWT there is an exe file in there but nothing comes up when I start it.

I signed up for and installed Windows 10 Insider Preview (now "Technical Preview"), so I am no longer on Windows 7. How do I get the final release as a free upgrade? I'm not going to get the notice now that the system is running Windows 10, right?

I wouldn't be surprised if the Win 10 "free upgrade" just lets you make a "recovery/restore disc" to use for clean installs similar to the way new laptops do nowadays.

With the option to do a complete backup/restore or just restore a clean install of the OS only.

And your Windows key and Restore Disc is permanently "married" to your PCs motherboard/hardware.

Why do I think this?
Because of the way they worded it that the free Win 10 upgrade will be "good for the life of the device".
I don't see any wording saying you can transfer your Free Win 10 upgrade to a new device if you build a new PC.
(even if your free upgrade is from a retail version of Win 7/8, not just OEM upgrades)

Of course, that would be for the Free Upgrade versions of Win 10 only.
Retail Win 10 would function same as always.

Depends if life of the device means as long as the hard drive is not dead. I upgraded from 7 to 8 and changed hard drives and cleaned installed with a 8.1 iso with the upgrade key I bought and didn't have issues.

Does it specially say Win 7 Enterprise when you turn on your computer was it just Win 7 Pro that you got off MSDN?

Win7 Enterprise also legit work for the school but if I remember no upgrades.... thought I could slip through.

Nope.

Windows 10 Upgrade Offer is valid for qualified Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 devices, including devices you already own. Some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device and market. The availability of Windows 10 upgrade for Windows Phone 8.1 devices may vary by OEM, mobile operator or carrier. Devices must be connected to the internet and have Windows Update enabled. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 enterprise offerings outside of this offer. To check for compatibility and other important installation information, visit your device manufacturer’s website and the Windows 10 Specifications page. Additional requirements may apply over time for updates. Security and features are kept automatically up-to-date which is always enabled.

It comes with KB3035583. I got it three times, and after getting confirmation emails from MS, I uninstalled that update, and then went into Windows Update and hid it. It kept trying to come back, and it really screwed up several important Win 7 customizations. Things are now back to normal. :)

Wait, why? Just scan online instead of WSUS :)

I have a GPO set to point locally, and everything I read said that they disabled it for domain joined machines, but that they could get it starting 7/29. Is this not correct?

at my work place, we have all dell machines and so far nobody has gotten the notice

~100 dell optiplex desktop with win7 64bit pro

~150 dell latitude laptop with win7 64bit pro

we have master image that was created with dell OEM win7 pro disk, and deployed them all without using the key from the sticker.

the desktops are join to domain, but laptops are on their own. users has full admin access to their laptops and are configured to automatic update.

all of our computers are fully updated, but still nothing. I hope we qualify for the upgrade as we might do it since its free.

Companies may have the msdn or enterprise editions which would not qualify for updates from what I read.

I think machines joined to a domain don't get the offer to upgrade to Windows 10. They're still eligible for the free upgrade if they're not the Enterprise version. I don't know why your laptops haven't gotten the offer.

With a lack of video drivers for Switchable Graphics laptops (thanks a lot HP), I may end up having to skip the free upgrade.

There should be a button in the UI to "scan online" or something like that. It will bypass the internal WSUS server and go to the live WU servers. They might be able to limit that with a group policy, and regardless if you're in an org for work...don't upgrade.
