I'm no longer neutral. Intel Blows, AMD Rocks!!!!

I tried to stay out of the AMD vs. Intel fray but I can't hold back any longer. I needed to build a system for about $1,200 - $1,300 with no monitor. Look at what I can get for $1,250 shipped.

1Ghz (1,000Mhz) AMD Athlon Thunderbird (Socket A) Abit KT7 Motherboard
256MB Corsair Microsystems PC133 SDRAM
45GB IBM Deskstar 75GXP ATA100 Harddrive
48x Sony EIDE CD-ROM
1.44MB Floppy Drive
32MB Abit GeForce 2 MX w/ TV Out (4X AGP)
10/100 Netgear FA310TX Network Card
Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live Audio Card
Altec Lansing ACS33 Speakers w/ Subwoofer
114 Key Microsoft Internet Keyboard
Microsoft Intellimouse w/ Wheel
Enlight 7237 ATX Case w/ 2 80mm Fans
300W ATX Power Supply

The cloeset Intel system will only have a 833Mhz processor.

ROCK ON AMD!!!!!

Thats a damn nice system too!

Wingdogg, I had the same thing, and I still think that the P3 may have the edge over my AMD in some games, but when it comes to price, AMD ROCKS!!!!!!

tikerz: Sorry Pricewatch is full or theives. Mwave.com for me. I feel likewise with you hanging your penis specs out in your sig wasting valuable bandwidth.

Bakwetu: Is the MSI much better? I've had good luck with the Abit but I have no loyalties. Does it offer better stability?

If you ask someone with experience of large quantities of mobos like jonnyGuru, he'll tell you there are much lower rma rates on the msi board than on the abit ones. It is also considered more stable. The only drawback of the msi board is that it doesn't feature a multiplier changer, but as you are getting a 1 gig cpu you are'nt going to oc anyway right? Soon, when msi k7t pro2 is out (with the multiplier thingie) I don't think there will be any doubt on which the best kt133 mobo is, but by then the ddr mobos will start to show up.

i have little experience with msi, but from their rep alone i'd get one of their boards over an abit anyday. i dont like abits 😛 i've heard msi are very stable, but i would get an asus over anything else if possible.

did you get all these parts from mwave? i need to build a system for my dad and that setup sounds schweeeeet

and now that i look at it i see i can cut a few things out... he will never need/use a geforce sound or speakers... good stuff! maybe throw an extra hd in there instead

Welcome the the Dark Side, Luke, err Windogg

Actually welocme to the light. You'll like the T-Bird.

Go with the MSI board, I've got one running one of the early Slot-A T-Birds, a 700Mhz OC'd to 900 and it is by far the most stable board I've ever had. MSI will have my business on my next board too. (BTW the 700 T-Bird runs @ 1 Ghz but tends to get a bit flaky, 900 rock solid)

LOL @ Adam K47. Oh yea, how could I forget? 🙂

Bakwetu & nuttervm: I'm sold. Bye-bye Abit, Hello MSI. (EDIT: ADD Fathom4) The person I'm building it for does some graphic design. I was debating between the G400 and GF2 MX and decided on the GF2 because it actually cost $20 cheaper. The speakers are onsale for about $35 so what they hey. I was thinking either G400 or GF2MX but the GF was actually $20 cheaper.

fkloster: No way, I was leaving it for you.

Windogg

If they do graphic design, I'd consider going back to the G400. G400 sounds like it is a guaranteed good 2D where G2MX is more hit or miss. (I'm assuming they do mostly graphics and not playing games.) I see a huge difference between the G200 and the various nvidia cards here at work.

cavingjan: I guess the excitement got the best of me. I've built many systems on the G400 and they are all solid as hell. Saving $20 just isn't worth the headache. G400 it is.

Windogg

Dammit!!!! Now I want a system TOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! 🙂

Mmmmmmm Geforce, No Radeon, NO NV20!!!!!!

1Ghz, 1.1Ghz, 1.2Ghz.........

Corsair Value, nahhhhhh, DDR-SDRAM

Ok, thats it I'm off to lunch...

Windogg

Good choices all around there, Windogg

G400 is an excellent card.

MSI boards, I have heard, are really nice. I'm an Abit guy, myself. I was going to go MSI on my Athlon, except the KA7 came out just as I was getting ready to put it together, so I got that. 🙂

Good luck

amish

Why would there be a need to get a ABIT KT7 board when you probably wouldn't really need to overclock an already 1000mhz system?

If AMD chips are so damn good why does every recent game lately need a patch just for AMD? Surely we cant ALWAYS blame the programmer? (Maybe we can) Whatever! 🙂

Reposted from an ot thread:

I sold off my PIII 700e and msi 6309 and used the profits to buy a new retail t-bird 850 and msi k7t pro. So far, so good.

We have a p3 933 stitting on the bench waiting for some peripherals at work, so I decided to try some benchmarking and comparing the results.

The results:
Content Creation 2000:
PIII 933: 37.6
Tbird 850: 35.8

Winstone 99:
PIII 933: 33.1
Tbird 850: 41.4
*looking on zd's website, the average score for a 933 should be around 42. I'll have to see what's wrong with the system at work tomorrow.

For anyone interested, the 933 has an intel 815 motherboard, TNT2 Pro Jaton card, 256MB Kingston PC 133, 45 GB ATA100 IBM drive running 98se. My box has a v3 2000, 256MB memman 133, 20 GB ATA66 Maxtor, and 2000pro sp-1.

Not bad for $300!

Three reasons made me shy away from Intel and join the AMD crowd.

1. New line of quality AMD Thunderbird Chips
2. Intel adopted RAMBUS, released aweful chip sets
3. AMD's chips are cheaper

I am still waiting for some quality chip sets with DDR-SDRAM support though...
