I'm ripping all my DVDs to my server, and I'm mad at how many fullscreen movies I bought. Apparently that son of a bitch thought he wouldn't need widescreen... what a dick

This is where I personally see a grey area in downloading movies, if I own the movie, I have bought and paid for it, why should I need to buy it AGAIN, just to have a 720p or 1080p copy of it?

Yeah well... as much as I agree with you even doing that isn't easy anymore. Especially if it's not a popular movie. And as "grey" as we want to try to make it, the laws are quite clear even if they're not fair.

I'm not doing this for all movies I've owned, just the ones I might want to watch again. Once they're ripped I won't have to bother with disc swapping ever again.

They aren't really though, in many countries for example, if I prove I own the movie I can download it as many times as I want as long as I am not distributing or selling.

If the law were MORE clear we wouldnt be having these issues.

It isn't just the HD aspect.

First of all, if its fullscreen then most likely it is a zoomed-in and cropped version of the original widescreen film. Like 1% of the time you get more visual data in a widescreen film, but it isn't often. Also every now and then you will run into DVD that is interlaced or telecined, both of which are so incredibly evil that I have wasted days trying to "fix" those problems with re-encoding. Finally you have the issue of the soundtrack, which was mostly low bitrate AC3 on DVDs and even when it was DTS it was a third the bitrate of the DTS core track on a Blu Ray.

For these reasons I have systematically replaced every single movie I had in DVD with Blu Ray or HD DVD versions (cause I rip em all anyway) over the years. Now all I have left are movies or (more likely) TV shows where the DVD copy is the only release it ever had. In those cases I just thank the heavens I at least got a DVD copy (like my favorite series as a kid "The Tick") so I am not dependant on someone like Netflix licensing the content.
 
heh, why would you ever do that? Even in the VHS days, I was happy to pay the premium for whatever letterboxed versions were available (say like, $40 for a letterbox VHS version of Tombstone....ugh. That being said, my Star Wars collectors edition letterboxed VHS for $120 was totally worth it).

Granted, none of those were anamorphic, and shitty resolution, BUT AT LEAST I GOT IT!
 
I am also mad at my past self... for even buying DVDs. I'm now trying to get rid of 20 DVDs for like 1/5 of what I paid for them on Craigslist.

Pre-Lucas ruin!

I have a friend from Pakistan who had DVDs of Star Wars that were bootlegs based off the Laserdisk. At the time I thought they were dumb but now I tell him to lock them in his safe.

yeah, and stupid me gave them away via public table in my building lobby when I moved away from Chicago--and fully aware that such a thing was very rare.
