Haha, someone needs to enable WEP.

I noticed a little while ago that there were a few other nodes my card (D-Link 650+) was pickin up so i decided to see if i could connect. Im not doing anything on them, in fact im about to sign off. Kinda neat though, im pullin in 6 different nodes from around the development. Didnt know these things would work so good.

When will people learn ;)

I found about 30 in my neighborhood when I was driving around testing my GPS software. Not a single one of them was WEP-enabled. Most of them also had the default ssid as well.

Eh well.

I have enough of those for the rest of my network. Besides, i cant afford the length cables i would need so that i could sit outside by a tree on campus and surf the net. :)

Sounds fun. Living without a laptop (and in a rural area) means I go without these activities. Life sucks. ;)

Hmmm ... I can only see a couple of potential neighbor's networks. If I had a bit more time, I'd do some digging.

ours doesnt have wep enabled.. but we have mac filtering on..

meaning if your mac id isnt not there in the system.. it wont let you in..
yes you can clone a mac.. but you got to know what mac's are in the system first.

I didnt enable wep because its not use.. its pretty much unsecure.. and even so.. when I use "SSL" wep or not its still secure.. and I use SSH.. so I think there would a reasonable amount of security.

or am I wrong.

We have 6 AP's near by.. ours in available if your near the buidling.. but I regularly pick up other ppls when walking around with teh laptop.

Heh.. I have WEP enabled, and also have it set to accept only a single connection from a single specific MAC address.

I guess I'm one of those ignorant masses. :(

I know I should turn it on, but I'm just too damn lazy to do so. Besides, what are the hackers going to steal? My papers for school? I don't keep financial information on my computers either, so they can't steal that. So hey, if anyone wants to freeload, stop by my place.

you should probably do something to warn 'em...

I never really understood how this wireless stuff worked. I mean, even if its wireless, don't you still need the Login/password to use your neighbors network? Or can anyone just magically pop onto it and start sucking up bandwidth? That just seems so stupid to me.

I don't think I'd keep those copies of Pete Townshend's bookmarks on your computer if I were you. :Q

The problem is that most people are stupid enough not to use passwords, or if they do use passwords, the passwords are not good. Did you realize that every Windows NT based machine, by default, shares the root of each drive as \\ComputerName\X$ if you give it the proper Administrator credentials? Given that many novice XP users probably don't have any password on their Admin account, hacking is all too easy in an unsecured wireless situation.

I was under the impression that if someone could sniff the packets sent from a laptop to the AP, they could yank the MAC address from them.

Couldn't someone, theoretically, launch a dos attack through your net connection then?

Oh, i guess I misunderstood it then. I thought it was a wireless internet connection, not a wireless lan. I would hope if i get a wireless internet connection (like an airport or something), my neighbors wouldn't be able to log on and use my ISP!

Yes, because to go through a NAT router dishing out IPs via DHCP, you normally do not need any special permissions. Thus, it would be easy to steal bandwidth, even if the computers on the LAN are properly secured.
