802.11x is a form of networking technology. You can share files or printers or net connections with it. It works just like a wired network, except maybe not as well at times. ;)

An airport (are you talking about Apple's thing?) is a form of 802.11b, as I understand it, and thus would be susceptible to the same security concerns as are being discussed here. Realize that to share an internet connection via wireless requires the same equipment / methods as it does to share said connection via a wired ethernet network. Thus, you must either invest in a hardware router/switch/access point unit, or run internet connection sharing software on the PC that has direct access to the internet connection.

Yeah thats what i'm talking about. I understand that if i got one, that my neighbors would technically be able to see that a wireless network exists, but they shouldn't be able to log on without some kind of password. The website says that there is a firewall and such built into it. I'm just really curious how all this works :)

heh has anyone ever had their own wireless mooched off of here? Is there a way to find out who is doing it if that happened? And is there a way u could use several of the wireless networks in ur area to get a combined kick ass bandwidth?

If I work in a high rise building and bring my laptop & WiFi card, how likely am I to see other wireless networks?

Don't forget the empty Pringles can. ;) Anybody else catch that news report a few months back ? All they used was that Pringles can, and a laptop with some *ahem* software... username/passwords, financial information, etc. picked out of thin air on the streets of New York City. Very very bad.

yes you can clone a mac.. but you got to know what mac's are in the system first.

I didnt enable wep because its not use.. its pretty much unsecure.. and even so.. when I use "SSL" wep or not its still secure.. and I use SSH.. so I think there would a reasonable amount of security.

or am I wrong.

We have 6 AP's near by.. ours in available if your near the buidling.. but I regularly pick up other ppls when walking around with teh laptop.

*nix platforms let you clone a mac address with a simple issue to ifconfig. Also, *nix platforms will let you put your wifi card into rfmon mode (if it's supported), so you can listen to arp requests. You can then easily get a known mac address.

No method is 100% secure, but enabling all of them at least makes it more difficult.

I know I should turn it on, but I'm just too damn lazy to do so. Besides, what are the hackers going to steal? My papers for school? I don't keep financial information on my computers either, so they can't steal that. So hey, if anyone wants to freeload, stop by my place.
School papers/reports are useless... but do you ever type passwords to email accounts, etc. ? There's always something to swipe...

And not always an issue of swiping. As mentioned before, launching DoS attacks from your machines/ip adress, hmm...how about surfing for some kiddie porn with the ip being logged on the server being your ip and not the hackers? Said hacker could then dl and place it on your pc, then delete it. FBI comes a knockin on your door, impounds your pc and when they search it, they find kiddie porn that you tried to erase to avoid prosicution.

Come to think of it, that is a pretty awful idea...I amaze myself some times :)

This thread cracks me up.

but we have mac filtering on..
Oh, ye of blessed faith. MAC filtering is nothing, 2 secs to break. And by the way windows machines can clone macs as fast as *nix machines.

Also..
I didnt enable wep because its not use.. its pretty much unsecure..

Sure it is able to crack, but did you realize that it takes about 1-3 GIGS of sniffed data to break 128bit WEP? Of course if someone wants in bad enough, they can do it, but that goes for everything.

heard that hackers were using this kind of stuff for naughty things. Denial of Service Attacks and such.

I agree that wireless is not secure for the reasons already posted, but you can still use it if you treat it just like the internet. I not only use MAC filtering and WEP, but I also put a firewall between it and the rest of my network that only allows VPN through. So it is just as if I was using VPN through the internet, only much faster.

here is one thing i dont get-- i have a wireless network setup in my house... the access point is in my room.. i get decent signal throughout the house, but once i go about 5 feet outside, i lose the signal completely...
so i figure that in order for anybody to be hacking into my network they'd have to be in my house.

how are you all seeing so many other networks, are you in apartments or what? and what kind of signal strength are you picking up? is it actually enough to be useable?

Do you have a weak access point? Because I could go all the way out to the pool (about 40 feet away) and still use it at my old place.

most of these people use it at work or in an apartment complex. There are also amplified antennas you can buy/make to increase your chance of picking up a signal.

nah, the access point is good.. if just doesnt go through walls worth s***. maybe just becuase this is an old house or something, it has more metal stuff in the walls blocking out the signal.

when i have the wireless router outside, i can take my laptop well over 100feet and still use it.

The problem is that most people are stupid enough not to use passwords, or if they do use passwords, the passwords are not good. Did you realize that every Windows NT based machine, by default, shares the root of each drive as \\ComputerName\X$ if you give it the proper Administrator credentials? Given that many novice XP users probably don't have any password on their Admin account, hacking is all too easy in an unsecured wireless situation.

Ah, young grasshopper. You are quick to assault the moron user. While wise, you must realize that the great MS Council has enabled measures to prevent USS (User Stupidity Syndrome) in WinXP. Specifically - all accounts with blank passwords are not permitted to log in via network. Including mapping network drives or accessing shares. Anyone trying to freeload someone's unpassworded XP Home install will encounter the lovely world of Guest permissions. Read - none. :D

Well, if you live in an apartment complex, especially on a college campus... well, let's just say my friend has DSL and Cable now. :D

My friend only had dial up at home but when he got his laptop in June (w/ wireless networking) he was able to leech off his neighbor's wireless network and get broadband speeds for free until he went to school.
