I asked about your RAM because I wanted to find you a motherboard that supported DDR2, instead of DDR. I think this motherboard will do:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128249
$111 + $3 Shipping

A case that includes a PSU (preferably 400W or greater). Here're some options:
http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/Category.asp?Category=9
It's about $60 - $100, depending on which one you pick

That leaves the video card.
If you want a good value option, then go with ysperalda's suggestion. If you're willing to spend every buck of that $600, then get this:

Graphics card overkill :p

A couple of things got forgotten - you'll need to add in copy of XP and a new case (possible suggestions: Antec 3000B for cheap without power supply or Antec Sonata with power supply etc)

However, from that it should be clear that the setup you could build by hand will be far superior to the one the guy in the shop offered.

Sell your spare parts on ebay after if you can - motherboard, case, power supply as that might go some way to making some of the money up.

That'll be the best bang/$

The GPU makes up for the lack of memory given that it's 8 pipelines. The X600 is less I believe. But if you wish to run lineage at ultra high resolution, go for a low end 6800 that has 256 mb ram.

Hey, he did say he had $600 to spend . Lol, but yeah, it would be overkill at this point. Wonder if there're any good deals on a Radeon in the $250-$300 range today...

Download this program and copy and paste the results of the system summary. Everest
Can't really determine what you have since you don't even know if it's a 775 pin P4. Running this program and pasting it will tell us what you have so we can help you better.

I'm sorry I can't help you with US prices of specific Intel recommendations. However:

New case I'd recommend Antec cases such as the 3000B because of its excellent cooling due to its 120mm fans. That also means it's quieter. Whatever you do make sure the case you use has good cooling (at low noise) less than $60 should be possible

Motherboard - something so long as its stable, quiet (no loud buggy chipset fans) and with good on-board sound at lowish CPU utilisation - perhaps look at their HD sound Realtek 880 or 882 I think?

Power supply make sure it's a quality brand. It doesn't need to by high wattage - any high quality one above 350W should be fine - think Seasonic, Enermax, Sparkle / Fortron, Tagan and if you buy online Rosewill (newegg?)

OS - (this is if you can't use your current one) are you sure you can't get one for less than $100? I'm seeing XP Home OEM versions for around $90

Graphics card - look at the 6600GT minimum. A step up is the 6800 vanilla which extra pipes (ie extra power) can be unlocked. However, otherwise if you can a step above that is the ATI X800XL and nvidia 6800GT which would set you in good sted for gaming.

If you got some of the parts combined with your Intel chip and RAM and you should be set - I think your RAM should be enough for lineage ...others will need to qualify that. But if you turn the settings down or else tweak your system a bit/close down unnecessary processes and services you should be good.

Are you considering buying online? By and large you'll get more choices and better prices oline and by quite a good amount.

Hmmm... It's a Prescott, but as for 478 or 775, can't really tell just by looking at that . The vast majority of Intel 915s are 775, but you'd have to be sure.

If you're looking to softmod the 6800 (vanilla), you'll need to get the AGP version. Also the X800 Pro with Vivo can apparently be similiarlly unlocked although perhaps better and possible to X800XT speeds here

You're going to need an os. HP requires "tatooing" a non-HP mobo in order for the system recovery disks to work. This costs $100. Oem xp home can be had for under $90 at Newegg.

The OS CD that you have from HP is made specifically to only work with HP computers. Lots of computer manufacturers do this nowadays. The check is a hardware check, so you're SOL getting it to work with custom parts. Unless I'm mistaken, I take it you're ordering alot of your parts from a store close to you, wouldn't it be cheaper to order online from newegg etc? Maybe you could also look into buying used parts from the For Sale / For Trade forum, just make sure that the person you're buying from is a respected trader.

Nope, you didn't give enough information. You have a Prescott for sure, but those come in two socket types. You downloaded and installed Everest right? Run that, go the left menu, select Motherboard > CPU. There should be a section that reads "CPU Physical Info." What does it say for "Package Type"?

I still can't tell from only that info. Whenever I use Everest, there's a section that tells me what socket type it is, but I guess it couldn't find that info about your proc. I guess the only option is to take it out and look at it :(.
