Umm kay
Higher up =less air=less dense= choking engine=maybe 1 second slower in the 1320..

My above numbers are from near sea-level, they're from dyno runs... the big number drop from the rated hp to the wheel hp is expected since they manufacturers often overquote and then you add drivetrain losses.

Heck, the WRX only puts 145hp to it's wheels... is it slow? I think NOT! It probably does make around 224hp at the crank.

The temperature was warmish from the pictures of the testing facility (warm desert test facility) and both car were compared at the same time. Temperature is definitely another factor into the hp equation usually... a good reason why coldair intakes can give you a good bump in wheel horsepower. That copy of SCC has dyno curves for the two cars too. The torque bands are obviously shaped similar since they are essentially the same engine with slight refinements. Fairly flat (200lb-ft@2000) and then dipping down at the 5200rpm crossover for the torque. HP is a fairly linear curve from 75hp @2k and rounds out after the crossover.

Personally, I'd go for the Maxima... for 25K, it's a better deal at that price!

Just a hint - I had a black car for years and it sucked in the summer! And the Pacific NW isn't known for the blistering summers ;). I would go for Sunlit Sand or Tungsten Blue :).

Hey man...glad to see your considering a Maxima...I'm the resident Maxima-whore of this forum!

There are a few Maxima owners here as well. Lets see...you can check out Maxima.org forums.

As for performance, there are few owners you run their Maxima in auto-x and actually do pretty well. As for speed? Most owners have their 2k2 Maximas in the low 14s..the lowest is a 14.3s in the 6-spd...he could have gotten a lower time but traction is a big problem. There are a few mods of the Maxima as well...an intake, called teh 'FrakenIntake' has shown gains of 10hp (dyno proven numerous times).

Most people are putting down 230hp and 234tq to the WHEELS! That's about 260hp and 267tq at the crank! Nissan seriously underated the torque of the Maxima...they claim 246tq, the cars are putting down 234tq to the wheels!!

Anyway goodluck with your choice man.

One possible reason for the Max being slower than the Altima (in 0-60) is the fact that it has a 6-speed manual. If Nissan didn't set the gearing for 0-60 runs, it may require an extra shift to get to 60 which in turn adds more time. :)

Haha. We've had black cars and know the pain. The black one I drove today was practically yellow, but I was pissed about the kinda disrespect the sales guy had for it. He kicked the wheels and constantly hit the key up against the paint on the car.

We have two back trucks (one 1995 GMC, one 1999 Chevy 3500 Dually 454 crew cab), a 1998 GMC Suburban.

Formerly, we had a 2000 Lincoln LS. That was a sweet car.

And now, a white Toyota Camry.

I am in love with that dark grey color.

Um, yeah, but if you are going to college don't you have a lot of educational expenses? Most people do have cars in college - justifiably - but precious few had "mid-level luxury" cars. When I was in school, as long as your car was safe and reliable you were good to go. This just seems like a ton of cash for a college student to spend...$25K. Heck, I'm a software developer with 5+ years experience who has lots of disposable income and I don't drive a $25K car. Your priorities are, well, unusual.

I was thinking that, too :) I was always amazed at the amount of debt my fellow students were willing to go into for some of the oddest things. I was making good money and had no college loans in college, but I still went with a decent used car....got me through school (or would have if it wasn't for that jackass that ran me into a telephone pole).
Oh well :) Your money. At least you choose a good car :)

Ralispec is talking of the celica of course :D I prefer the sentra though!

Anwyay I wish I had something nice like that to "get me through college". You speak as if it's a beater you have to put up with until you get out!

Does such a thing exist? A $25k beater?!
Well let me put it this way....most college students I know who had to buy their own cars stuck to decent used cars for under $10k. A few who didn't seem to have good "money sense" went and bought brand new cars.
I make $50k/year and I thought $18k was a lot to spend on a car, so that's where I'm coming from :)

Enough of this charade. I have to clear rallispec's name - he is talking about the Sentra Spec-V. Too many people are quoting what I said that I can't let this continue :)

Oh, at least. So many kiddies have 330i's that I really should get the new M3 and show them who's boss.

I just bought a Majestic Blue 2K2 SE for my wife. (6M/Leather/Sunroof/Bose/ect.)
We pick it up tomorrow and the first 'mod' will be to get an X-Pel treatment. Dark Nissan colors chip from high wind velocity!
We had to decide between trading in the 95 Max SE with 160K miles or the 96 VW Passat with only 61K miles, it was an easy choice so now we have two Maximas and a 4Runner. Negotiating AFTER a test drive is impeded by the huge grin on your face.

actually, i'm not sure?
is it because VW has the better resale value? or you just love maxima's? ;)

Wow, all the Nissan lovers on this board... must be my influence at work :D

If I started listing ALL the items that have caused problems in the VW it would take me a while. The best thing to buy for that car would have been a VAG-COM device or a similar OBDII tool to diagnose the constant CELs. The Max still runs like new.
As far a resale we lost some trade-in value because the odometer (along with the entire dash) had been replaced at 25K miles and the next title would have read 'true milage unknown' which may turn some buyers off even though we know exactly how many miles are on the car. Also the VW dealer doing the appraisal told the Nissan dealer that the car was a 'high maintenance vehicle' and we were lucky with just the number of problems we had!

A very common statement. The VW fanboys don't like to hear it, however.
