Add Take This Life to that list

Plus, I second checking out Children of Bodom

Soilwork - nerve, distance, stabbing the drama, follow the hollow, overload, song of the damned, distortion sleep
Trivium - Departure, Like light to fly, Pull harder on the strings of your martyr, Ascendency, Dying in your arms, Rain
Children of Bodom - Bodom after midnight, everytime I die, hate me
In flames - listed above.

I absolutely love Opeth and can't stand most any other "growling" music. I'll recommend Dream Theater along with Static-X and Tool, but if you like Opeth's mellow music you would really enjoy Porcupine Tree as well.

Some good suggestions here it seems, but I know there are many Opeth fans at www.head-fi.org too. If you did a search there (in the music section), you'd find plenty of threads with the info you're looking for.

Do not compare early Metallica to Opeth. WTF?

Okay, so I love Opeth. I have every Opeth album. I started listening to Katatonia's new stuff, and Katatonia, who are friends with Opeth, are now progressive rock, much like Opeth, but at one time were black metal. I heard a soft Opeth song (Benighted) and was like damn, this band must be awesome, so I was surprised when I heard the vocals for the rest of the albums. But it grew on me and now they are my favorite band.

So I recommend Katatonia - Brave Murder Day (it has the lead singer of Opeth on vocals, but the rest of the band is Katatonia, the lead singer lost his voice for this album).
I also recommend a band called Daylight Dies. The album is No Reply. Freaking awesome band out of Charlotte, NC.

Also recommend Novembre AND October Tide. October Tide features Katatonia's vocalist when he still had the growls left in his voice.

Contact me if you need samples.

I echo most of the recommendations in this thread.

Hard to find a band similar to Opeth. I think their sound is pretty unique (you gotta see them live if you get a chance...great show)

Children of Bodom
Soilwork
In Flames
Dimmu Borgir
Nightwish
Killswitch Engage
Morbid Angel (mostly Covenant and Domination)

Metallica is too bright sounding with their major/pentatonic scales

Opeth is way too dark to be compared with Metallica. They uses some funky minor/middle easten-like notes. I love them!

If you need lots of people to recommend the same stuff, here's my favorites:

Nightwish
Mudvayne
Children of Bodum
Dimmu Borgir

Since this changed from an Opeth thread to Death Metal discussion, here are some good bands if you like CoB and older In Flames: (these are my favs)

Dark Tranquillity
Blinded Colony
Mors Principium Est - Unborn
Blood Stain Child
Skyfire - Spectral
Catamenia
Burden of Grief - Fields Of Salvation
Kalmah - all!
Norther - all!
Nightrage
Ensiferum
Disarmonia Mundi
Cipher System
Insomnium
The Duskfall

Enjoy!
