Man, I don't even know if I should jump in... what the heck, here is my take...
I am in engineering management (that means I am an engineering and a manager, not that I manage engineers) and as such wear a suit every day. While I do go somewhat thrifty on my suits ($500 max for a single suit) I prefer higher quality clothing whenever I am "out and about". This does NOT mean that I spend $100 on a friggen shirt. If you are smart and know how to shop you can come away with good quality clothes for not much money.
Some examples include the wrinkle and stain resistant shirts from Eddie-Bauer, I got a bunch when they were on sale for $30 each. Now, years later, these basic color shirts I bought are still "in style", don't cost much to maintain as you don't have to dry-clean or iron (except every once in a while), and are still in great shape. Another are the sales at Macy's (previously the bon here in the northwest). I get great quality clothes for cheap from brands I like such as polo, alfani, and others. I usually spend $100-150 at a Macy's sale but for that I get several outfits as well as random other seperates.
I also do some shopping at Target, Costco, Old Navy, and Fred Meyer. Things like socks, undershirts, boxers and other high-use, quick wearing out clothes I pick up there as they are cheaper. I am by no means a clothing snob but my wife and I do a good job of getting good clothes for less.
As for the actual topic at hand, I don't like A&F simply because of their marketing campaign. I have never tried on their clothes or entered their stores and never plan to, simple as that. If you are more concerned with the brand name than the quality then you have issues, and if you think a shirt is worth $100 you have even more problems.

A&F is good stuff, as is Hollister clothing.
I am starting to prefer Express for Men though, they have some very very nice polos and button-ups that I've seen, might start shopping there

TJ Maxx carries the SAME stuff. Just last years close outs rather than this years trends. TJ Maxx is a TRUE outlet, not the kind that you find at outlet malls that sell cheaper made versions.
The only difference is the price and atmosphere.
I'll stack the longevity of my clothes against anyone else's.
And let's face it, if you're a trendy dresser, why the fsck do you care if clothes last for years? You wont be wearing them but for a year or two anyhow.
Sales are just a little less stupid than retail. Clearance and outlets (REAL outlets) are the better choice.

I've got to stop assuming people on these forums socialize in the same kinds of circles my GF and I do. I suppose if I worked a nine to five job, came home, had a few beers, played with the kids, mowed the lawn, and had a weekend BBQ with "sports fan" friends, I would simply wear basic jeans and a tee.

Well, I don't like your attitude, but I have to say you are right. Most people here are probably younger than me, but I assure you cannot afford to wear anything less smart than Emporio Armani or Dolce&Gabbana or Paul Smith. You just cannot go to work with wathever you want: image DOES is of critical importance. I am not saying that this is a right thing, but it does is the way it is. Probably the fact that I live in New York and Paris is important, it for sure might be different in other areas. It's interesting to note, however, that in Paris people dress very very high during job hours or when going to clubs, but feel free to go to their cafè wearing pajamas (literally) on sunday morning.

I walked into an A&F once... following a friend in. I swear, the looks they gave me... blah. A guy I went to high school with modeled for them.. and was on the OC... and that stupid GTO commerical movie (mr. chris carmack)
Some people want to be cheap for the purposes untold, in which they will be able to get something of a little more quality in something else. People spend their money in different ways. No need to get angry about someone's opinion on buying needs. Just gotta pay the bills you know?
strange set of responses in this thread. IF someone said "omg i love A&F, and i'll only buy their clothes because they're cool," then some of these responses are ok, but if someone says "wow A&F clothes are actually comfortable, and durable, well worth the extra $20," (like the OP) I don't see a problem with someone appreciating quality. As long as the person doesn't choose clothing according to current trends, but according to who they are, that's fine by me!
