I'm gonna be a gamer

So I have never bought a console. Ok, last year I bought a slim PS2 to play Katamari then returned it.

I have never been a big gamer, I have CS:S and play that a couple times a week. UT was an old favorite. At work we have a ton of systems, I play Guitar Hero there a few times a week.

Point is, I have never been a big gamer. Then I saw the Wii, had to have it. Went to EB and preordered it. I then noticed they were selling on eBay for $600+, so I sold my preorder for $610. After fees and what not, I made about $250 (i included a wiimote and nunchuck). We will revisit the Wii later.

Then there is the PS3, i know this pisses some folks off, but I camped out just to sell it. I was first in line at a Target in my town (my Best buy plan was foiled when there 20 people on Wednesday). I bought it and put it on eBay. eBay mistakingly took my auction down. After they reviewed they told me I could put it back up today, too late because I had relisted and sold it for $1256. Which made me about $450, not as much as I wanted but hey its something and the camping out for 44 hours was a blast.

So back to the Wii, I still wanted one but based on the reports I figured walking in on launch day would get me one since there were so many. Nope. Sold out. Oh well I thought, I can wait. But I was looking on eBay and saw one ending soon: Nintendo Wii with Zelda and Extra Remote... ok. I'll bite. One it for $375 shipped, $10 over retail + tax in my state. A Sweet deal considering they were going for $430 at the time, and that was just the console! I found it funny having sold mine for so much and then getting one for so little while the other auctions around it were going for much more. Heck yesterday they were back in the $600 range.

I was feeling pretty good. Then there is the Xbox 360. As some of you may know, Amazon was selling core systems for $100 yesterday. I wanted one to give it a shot. I practiced my technique and guess what, it paid off. I got one. I am so frackin excited. It is such a great deal. THen I picked up the live gold camera package today for just $40. I know i need an HD for live, but I am going to hold out on registering it until they release the rumored 80GB hard drive.

So. Not only will I now have to buy games and play these more often, I got two next gen consoles for basically $225 ($100 360 + $125 Wii (Price of Wii on eBay - my Wii eBay preorder profit). If you factor in my PS3 profits, I walked away with 2 consoles and $225.

So yeah, I am gonna be a gamer.

Just a note before I get yelled at, I had no intention of selling my preordered Wii when I got. I wanted it for myself, and considering everyone thought stock would be plentiful I didn't even think about it. Once I saw that people were paying so much for them, I couldnt resist... :)

while i agree with you, i'd keep checking ebay. not everyone is gonna buy wiis for insane prices so there will be tons of people with unsold wiis who will be forced to lower the prices.

That is where you are wrong. I didn't buy the Wii to sell it originally. I pre-ordered for myself because I think it is great. I only sold it because I can't pass up profit. And people were paying that amount, I didn't force them to buy. I let the market decide and it did, they gave me $610.

I didn't get one on launch day, but I wasn't one of the people who camped out and somehow managed to get 10 of the things. I didn't get one on launch day. But I can wait. I just so happened to be looking on eBay and sniped that auction and got a great price. Only $10 over retail so it is possible.

I assumed the Wiis would be plentiful. I am sorry it isn't but don't blame me. I didn't hinder anyones chance to get one on launch day. The pre-orders at my local EB weren't sold out till 3pm that day. And I showed up an hour before...

Don't be so pissed. Once I went to the stores on launch day I realized that people had PS3 syndrome and were buying them all up. It is annoying but oh well. Just wait until you can buy it for a decent price.

I think it is sad to see people with stacks of Wiis on eBay, thats not cool. I wasn't one of those people though.

Ok. I will explain to you my mad skills.

I used these images to determine where the buttons would be.

This one is an overlay of the Amazon logon page, the get the deal page and the sample get this deal in the Amazon buying tips. I used it as a guide so that my mouse would be in position on each screen.
http://static.flickr.com/104/305191911_68d5ad8cc6_o.jpg

The other was a precise clock. Seconds is what I need. I tested in the Amazon discussions to make sure the seconds were accurate and they were.

This is pretty much what my screen looked like close to sale time, except i was on the deal page and not the login. I had the deal page on the left and the clock on the right.

Refresh time was important. Also, I think not doing a million refreshes before 11:00 helps a lot. Some people on the Amazon discussions said they had 5 tabs open and refreshed them all. Which increases the load. I had one tab open, and anything that would take network resources like bittorrent, adium, etc. closed. I refreshed precisely at 11, i did one test refresh to check the latency at about 10:55, took about 5 seconds for the page to come up. After that I waited. I CANNOT STRESS HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO LIMIT THE TABS AND THE NUMBER OF REFRESHES YOU DO. Having 10 tabs open will not help you at all.

My browser saves my username and password. So I was mostly concerned with the button, I knew I had to move my mouse slightly above and to the left of the xbox image. I was also prepared if it didnt have the values. I made my password shorter and easy. I also had my email address in my clipboard and to avoid moving the mouse from its position, I knew the number of tabs i need to do. 4 for the username and another 2 for the password.

I never got the login screen though. I think its because I had logged in 10 minutes before the sale. Instead it went straight to the question. Which is where I almost lost it. In my confused frenzy I clicked the first yellow button I saw. Only to notice the agree to terms box. And checked it and click the button again. Then I noticed the question, 15 + 2, oh crap i thought. I asnwered it quick and clicked the button again. And I got it... I was shocked. I got the email from Amazon with the code at 11:00:24. Amazon said they were gone in 29 seconds.

So I recommend you login if you are going for any of the other deals. That eliminates a step that most people are expecting to deal with. I wish I could of gotten a screen of the question page but I was too focused on getting the deal.

So that is how I did it. Might seem hardcore, but being prepared helped me quite a bit.

Question: What time did you refresh the amazon customer's vote page? I synced my time to amazon time too, it's just that the server was teh suckx. What time did you hit refresh (right at 11:00 PST)?

Yeah I did it right at 11:00, I had my finger on the Apple key waiting to hit R, and I had the pointer in place for a swift click. It took about 6 secs for the page to come up. The button was there and I clicked.

Added refresh time info to the explanation. I would say if you plan on trying for the other deals, you might want to try this method. I don't think one can just hop right in and get it without preparation.

Thanks for the congrats guys. I know a lot of people are bitter about it, so it is nice to see some people being nice about it. The amazon discussions are ridiculous, reporting amazon to the BBB and boycotting. I think that is insane. Even if I didn't win, I would just shrug it off.

You think you're l337??? Try doing all that...at 70mph on a friggin' highway! Thanks to traffic I hadn't reached my uncle's house yet, so I was sittin' in the passenger seat with laptop in hand, connected to VZW BroadbandAccess, trying to time my refresh and all that. I couldn't even get the page to load, nor could my friend back in DC who was trying to get one for me using his uber FiOS connection.

The only thing that bothers me about your post is that you bought a PS2 to play one game, then returned it. Stores aren't there to provide you with a free rental service.

I pretty much did the same thing as you (synced my time with amazon via time.gov). I also created a macro for my username and for my pword. Just happened that it took FOUR FREAKING MINUTES to reload the page at 11:00 AM...

I really did want it. But I changed my mind. I had to sell the games on eBay since they were open so I took a loss on those.
