You get the privilege of paying like 10 grand for something that only costs $500 or so.
 
With renting you typically trade money for convenience, or limited use. It costs more, but problems get handled. Cars, semi exotic tools, plotters... Hell, I could see lawnmower rental being attractive to some people. A water heater just sits there. They typically require zero intervention by the user, and you could go 10 years never even seeing it.

I think it was last year I first heard about water heater rentals. Seems so arbitrary and pointless. Like renting a toilet or a kitchen sink. I'd love to know how it got started, and how a whole population became convinced it was a good idea.

My water heater has an 18 year warranty (13 manufacturer + 5 extended from Lowes) which is about its lifetime, provided I stick to yearly maintenance. Whole thing cost about $1k (55 gallon). I don't understand this "Free service" with the rental thing when they already come with that.

Canadians are sheep when it comes to water heater.

Been trying to convince my wife to stop renting. She is like but what if it breaks and I asked her if she remembered ever having one break and no answer...

You have time to get your beard done in 90s Coolio-style braids, right? Have them weave in some crafting wire so you can shape them however you want.

pretty much, especially that most of the drain valves are all plastic now.

Get some positive PR out there now so they'll have some normal footage of you.

That way, when all the news agencies come to talk to your neighbors and all they can say is, "He was quiet and kept to himself....", the footage will contradict their statements.
