Me and a friend have talked about dumpster diving, and we're going to do it for the first time tonight.

We're going to be going to blockbuster video, and some local computer shops for stuff. Got any other places to try out? We're open for ideas.

Some basic stuff we know about:

Wear gloves and old clothes (long sleeve shirt and pants)
Bring a flashlight
Don't get any food (doesn't matter since we won't be going to any places that sell food)
Be careful, since their could be sharp objects, glass and such.

Any other tips? Thanks for any help!

Some place in California [Where else?:)] actually published a guide for dumpster diving a few years back.,,,Used taxpayer's money of course. Try calling a homeless shelter and ask them for one.

LOL - go for it, let us know if you come up with anything good :D

P.S. watch out for used syringes :D

Seriously, for your safety, be careful of sharp stuff, watch it if you're gonna be tearing through bags and stuff, you never know when someone could've tossed a broken jar or a glass into a trashbag, and tossed it in there.

why is dumpster diving illegal? i don't understand.... that stuff is just going to landfill anyways. if people have sensitive documents, they should destroy them.

I'm sure you've never broken or bent a law

It's not illegal everywhere - check your local laws.

there was a funny thread at f@wallet that had some stories of dumpster diving. depending on what store it was, people were finding interesting things.

i'm not sure if i'd ever do it, though

To everyone who said what I said was mean: you've never said anything mean in your life? Likely no. Get over it. What I said wasn't mean. For god sakes... he's going DUMPSTER DIVING. What kind of low-life rummages through someone's trash to have something that they want? Someone who's (1) cheap and (2) has little or no dignity. My god, man... save up and buy it for yourself.

i can't tell if you're joking or not, but i've noticed that you seem to have moral diarrhea more and more often lately.

Whether or not it's illegal, I have to agree with one part of FFM's post. (And it pains me to admit it.)

Who the hell wants to go dumpster diving? Would you go over to your friends house and start going through their trash to see if they threw out something you want?
