I'm getting tremendous mem OCs w/ Rivatuner (890 on XTX)

What is going on here? 890 on air for memory is really high... on the hardware monitoring screen when I tab out of BF2 it does indeed show the clocks at 695/890... and when I increase it to 900 it becomes unstable so it seems as though it is really ocing or at least changing something... it does seem to bench higher also...

Any ideas if this is a legit 890? Are the timings loosened or something? I cannot use ATI tool because it freezes no matter what clocks I am at (even stock, I hate it) so I've been using rivatuner...

anyone know where I can obtain a program that will allow voltage alteration aside from ATITool?

From what I've seen most of the OCing programs loosen mem timmings I don't know about rivatuner though. Does it really matter if it is benching highier? also do you have the CCC installed?

What do you mean loosen timings? if I oc 100mhz on a card, it really isnt making anything faster since it's loosening the timings on the card?

Oh, where can I get "Overclocker"? The only one I can find is at techpowerup for the x1800xt series.. is that the right one?

There you go lazy :p

BTW no matter how loose the timings are with rivatuner it seems your friend has a diamond piece. 890 is hard to get even with loose timings.
Just keep this one and give your firend the one you will buy :p

Its just like DDR ram. For most ram the highier clock it has the looser you have to set the timmings. The key is to find where the best performance is. If is benching better than its obviously still helping performance and not loosening it up too much.

On stock cooling I have seen very few XTXs get that high. I could be wrong but I don't think they speedbin the BJ-11 modules used for XTX cards. Even over at Xtreme, most guys are maxing out at about where my cards does (875MHz) with ATI Tool. I've seen guys hit 900-920MHz with the Overclocker program but it generally benches lower because of the looser timings. I'm curious to find out if Rivatuner loosens the timings like Overclocker does.

It's a very good o/c on mem. Now the one that told you this is normal for XTX he's out of reality.. If every XTX was hitting almost their rated speed guaranteed then I would sell my xt for an xtx in a heartbeat. I visit XS and you should keep in mind that most people in these forums are the majority of the hardest o/cers you can find.
It's not unsurpassing it's a very good one though.. Look at what Elfear told you.
My advice is keep this one it's not guaranteed that a new brand XTX could reach these clocks. ;)

I don't believe so. The best overclocking app I've found for the X800/X850 series cards is ATI Tool.

Actually I decided not to buy it and go with a Saphhire brand. It didnt bench higher so my guess is that the timings were loosened, my 3DMark 05 score wasnt changed.

On the other hand I have been pleased with it overall, it had the performance leap of a next gen card over my GTX and I wasnt expecting that. Yes Keys, I've been raving about it a bit but IMO the praise is deserved

It's all good. Glad you're happy with it. What is your friend using while you have his card? He should be going through heavy withdrawral right now.
