So, I'm leaving work yesterday on my mountain bike. With all the new construction and whatnot here, there's only one entry/exit point to the CDC campus and it happens to be relatively far out of my way.

For whatever reason (I'd find out later), they had one of the side gates open. Since I was on my bike, I figured I'd nip out that way and save myself a few minutes.

Diagram of situation.

The main entrance/exit is way over to the left off the map.

I ride up the side road and am maybe 6 feet away from leaving the campus when one of our illustrious Rent-A-Cops steps in front of me and says "I'm sorry sir, but you can't go this way."

Me: Okay, I didn't know. I won't come this way again tomorrow, but I'm almost off the campus now.

Him: This is controlled access, you can't go this way.

Me: Right, but I already did.

Him: Sir, you're going to need to turn around. This is controlled access for the construction trucks. You can't be here.

Me: Okay, so you don't want people in the "Controlled Access" (he really liked saying this) area. I just went through it because I didn't know and you didn't notice me. Now I'm here, and I'm within spitting distance of the sidewalk and you're saying I have to turn around.

Him: Yes, this is a controlled access area.

Me: So, rather than just getting me off the controlled access area by the shortest route possible, you're going to send me back into it.......just on principle?

Him: *looks really pissed off*

Me: Can you tell me why, exactly?

Him: BECAUSE I SAID SO!

Me: Okay, have a good one. Keep up the good work.

...and I turned around and rode back down through the controlled access thing.

Well, he could have been nicer about it, but he didn't HAVE to as you were clearly in the wrong. Though it's not a big deal either way.

I started to tell him he'd probably have noticed I was entering the CONTROLLED ACCESS ZONE if he hadn't been running his mouth with the other guy there, but he looked like he was about to mace me so I shut up.

No, it's not. My whole point was that the proper course of action was to get me out of the ZONE via the shortest route possible. He just couldn't figure that out, which is what's so funny.

as i said its no surprise. you were questioning his authority. he told you to go back the way you came you asked why since you were nearly out. that was not the correct response (well to him anyway). when you questioned it he got mad.

i would say 90% of the cops i have seen are great. while they do have an ego (i would think its needed for such a job) they have been kind, helpful and courteous.

its just when you get that one bad officer that is on a power trip it can get bad.

well, yes for us, of course. but then i think about how much the rent-a-cop thinks that he's done a good job of preventing you from breaking the law and that makes me feel sad for him.

The cop is trying to do his job and you had to give him sh!t about it. They get that all day long and people wonder why they are so pissed off all the time?

He wasn't telling you that to be a dick. He was just doing his job. Give him a break.

Agreed. I have no issues with cops 90% of the time. This was just one of the 10%-ers and I had a good time fscking with him. :D

Did you read the whole thing?

I'd already gone all the was through THE ZONE because he was running his mouth and therefore didn't see me. The appropriate course of action was to get me out of THE ZONE asap.....not send me all the way back through it.

now now...he really shouldn't have sent him back the way he came if it was such a dangerous area, should he? he should have got him out of there along the shortest possible route.

i honestly would have tried to negotiate it too since it seems Fausto was so close to his destination.

I literally could have spit on the sidewalk from where the cop and I were having the discussion. There was exactly no logic in sending me back the way I came.

Nope, the appropriate course of action was to make you go around, so you didn't think you "got away with it that time" and encourage the same behavior in the future.

I even said "I didn't know, sorry. I won't do the same thing tomorrow." You don't send me back into THE ZONE to prove a point after telling me it's for dumptrucks.

Again, I am not one to mess with cops. I know their job sucks and I give them the benefit of the doubt 99% of the time. This guy was just retarded and (I think) embarrassed he didn't see me coming.

We need more info. Was the critical part of the controlled access those last few feet? Ie was there a crime there and he is protecting the last few feet for evidence collection nad your presence in the last few feet may destroy the evidence? Or did you already cross the critical part?

Fausto, you are correct that the cop should just get you out of there in the shortest route. He was probably retarded in not letting you pass. However, you already (a) entered a controlled access area without authorization, an area where cops are standing by to protect and (b) implied that you were considering breaking a direct order from a cop. Both of which could get you into big trouble. Should cops just ignore those things to make you happy? I agree with Amused. It is the cops job to make sure no one goes through that gate (in either direction). He is just doing what he was commanded to do. Give him a little break (especially when you have already done multiple wrong things).
