You make a valid point but then totally discredit yourself by admitting that you used some of the money saved on a ring to throw away gambling. We went to a bunch of shows (Carrot top, David Copperfield, a couple of topless reviews) , drove to the grand canyon, did the damn tour, stayed in a suite all 8 nights, and ate at a lot of 5 star restaurants my wife has always wanted to try. We did things that we'll remember for the rest of our lives... to this day we see something on tv and say "Hey, we did that! That was awesome!"

btw, we only gambled $170... which $150 was from my wife on the 25cent slots. 😀

Go for something with better colour. I think the one I got my wife was a D and VS1. It isn't nearly as big though, something like .25 ct for the main stone, and .5 ct total weight.

D color is not necessary. You can't tell the difference between D,E and F unless you put both stones right next to each other in excellent lighting.

As has been mentioned in previous threads, the most important factor is the cut quality. Getting an excellent cut G-H, VS2-SI2 would be ideal IMO. That allows you to max out on the weight. Of course, some women are more sensitive to color than others. It's also hard to find a stone with those perfect specs so you will inevitably have to make compromises in certain areas.

But remember, cut quality is most important.

OP, where are you located? As someone else suggested (and I personally recommend) the Diamond District in NYC. I got my wife's engagement ring and both our wedding bands from the same dude there... super cheap. Her ring was a 1.0something round cut, with about .5 total carats on the sides (3 diamonds on each side). Center stone was a VVS1 / E color, with GIA cert. Platinum setting. Total cost of the ring was $5k cash. Same ring from Tiffany's was $12k!! Must be the blue box that adds the premium...

What's even better is that my wife is 5', 100lbs so the ring looks massive on her finger LOL.

1ct HAS ALWAYS been a standard.

That said most people are better off going slightly under that, or slightly under 3/4, 1/2 and getting a better cut stone (cut as in grade of cut like 1A, 2A, 2B, etc not princess, round, etc).

People tend to spend too much on color and clarity. An SI1/2, VS2 is usually perfectly fine in 1ct sizing once set. If using yellow gold colors above even I are sometimes wasteful (going to G/H is not usually a huge premium though)...

My first wife I picked up a .42 round for...pretty much near H&A. Most thought it was at least a carat just seeing it...under close look you could tell it was smaller. We put most of our money into our first home. I got a steal on this one due to getting word that a jeweler was getting ready to file bankruptcy.

My second financee I bought a Princess .71 EGL F/VS1 cut extremely well for $2100 in 2000.

My current wife didn't want a ring at the time...she wants one eventually but still wants to keep getting things for our home right now.

when i got my ring appraised, the appraiser really liked the diamonds he's seen from blue nile. it's a good place to go with good prices.
