The gf and I have been looking at engagement rings lately. She decided that she liked a solitaire more than a channel setting band. I found the ring I am going to get her. We initially decided to buy from Baily Banks & Biddle, as they had a ring they she liked.
She tried on a 1.24 ct, H color, SI1 ring in palladium, certified (not GIA); so thats the ring we decided to go with....

however, I did some searching online and I was able to find a 1.53 ct, H color, VS1 solitaire in Platinum that's GIA certified. The price is a bit more, butin the general price range I was looking at.

Im a little nervous, partially because I am taking a step towards getting engaged, and partially because Im buying such a high-priced item.

--------------------UPDATE 11/07/07-----------------------------

Well, I bought the ring from an online merchant. It's a 1.51ct., H color, VS1 clarity, very good cut diamond with a GIA lab report. It's set in a platinum solitaire band.

The ring should arrive on the 12th of this month. On the 14th, I plan on visiting her parent's store in the early morning hours when it's not busy, and asking them for their permission to marry their daughter. Maybe I'll bring them some coffee and bagels; that way they'll feel bad if they want to say no 😛

Not sure how I'll propose yet, but I'll keep updating as this goes on; I'll also post some pictures of the ring when it arrives.

------------------UPDATE 11/18/07---------------------------------

I'm engaged. I proposed to her in Atlantic City this last Thursday. I contacted the hotel and has them arrange flowers, dinner, and champagne in our room at 8pm while we were downstairs gambling. I told her that I needed to use the bathroom and I wanted to go to the room. We went up to the room and after she was surprised with the dinner and flowers, I proposed. She loves the ring.

We haven't set a date or anything like that yet. I'd like to wait a month before we start getting into any details.

So that's it for me. I'm engaged and I'll be bringing my new fiancee to the DC ATOT meetup this December.

dude, why are you buying from there? prices there are ridiculously high. They were quoting me 10K for a 1 carat VS1 ring! i was able to find a better ring for half the price on blue nile

The 1.5 ct is still within my budget. In the store, we tried on a 1.24ct and a 1.5ct solitare. She ended up telling me that the 1.24ct was what she wanted, and that the 1.5ct looked funny on her small hands. But I suspect she was just telling me that because it was cheaper.

I am purchasing the 1.5ct ring from bluenile. We tried rings on at Baily Banks & Biddle, and we initially found one we liked there. But I went home and did some searching, and found a much better diamond (a bit more $ though).
 
Have you checked Sam's Club or Costco? I was looking the other day, and while the selection isn't great the prices were awesome for certified.

EDIT: And why are you going ring shopping with the GF? Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose and remove the surprise element? She's suckering you into buying a HUGE ring that you will both regret wasting money on.

I wanted to take her to the store to try on several styles and decide what she likes. We tried on some rings with channel setting sidestones, and we tried on some solitares of various sizes. I figure, she's going to be wearing it everyday, so I want her to have the ring she wants most.

Oh, and no, I havent checked Costco, although I dont have a membership.
 
Dont listen to all the lonely retards on here that say you are stupid for buying a diamond for your GF. It's just their way of masking their inadequacy with idealism so they can justify their complete failure in trying to consort with the opposite sex.

I didn't say buy a diamond, but 1.5 is huge and unless the dude is banking he's probably going to regret sooner or later paying 10k for something that doesn't drive him to work or provide shelter.
 
If she preferred the smaller one, I'd buy that.

Besides, she may have already allocated the cash difference for the wedding 😛

Just my opinion, anything over 1ct is a waste.

Not only is the price higher, but a HUGE rock on her finger is going to actually be a liability. Not only is it worth more if it were to be lost or stolen, it's more likely to get snagged on anything and everything.

If you have to get such a big stone, consider a 6 prong setting that's lower to the band to protect the stone. If you get a GIA certified stone, make sure it's laser engraved on the girdle. If not, it's just been GIA certified by a jeweler that's taken a certification class....which is not the same thing.

I've heard others say they've had good luck buying online, etc... I personally believe that if you can't see the stone and compare its quality to other, similar stones, you don't really know what you're getting. I got my wife a .80 ct, G, VS1, Ideal cut. It's the perfect size for the setting...if it were any bigger it wouldn't look right....also it's more balanced than a larger stone, but it still wasn't cheap.

Huh? A GIA cert means that the stone was evaluated by the GIA. That is not something any Jeweler with a certification class can do. Besides, laser engraving is a separate process and has nothing to do with the GIA cert itself. Laser engraving can be done by GIA as well as many other places.

Also, laser engraving can be easily be polished off.

Regardless of the size of the stone, you are probably going to want a rider on your insurance policy to cover accidental loss or theft, especially if it is going to be worn every day (which it will).

You just get a rider on your homeowners or renters insurance.
 
Hit Manhattan's midtown (42-46) and shop around. You'll find better diamonds for better prices, and many of them are certifiably conflict-free. It will be worth the $100 plane ticket.

You must show an appraisal. The insurance is fairly cheap. Lola's is about $100/year.
 
heh expensive engagement rings are a huge rip off. you buy her a $10k ring then another one for the wedding.

unless you are makeing $300k a year its nuts.

i would rather put that 10k to a house or something that is actually usefull.

My wife and I have all of our jewelry/watches/whatever insured. It's included in the home owner's insurance policy. If any individual item is over $10k (I think it's $10k, but it might depend on the insurer) they want appraisals, but your jeweler should furnish them anyway.
