I have to admit that shark fin soup is good

but since sharks are going extinct, i think all forms all hunting should be banned asap

Another thing, the hunting of sharks have been curbed dramatically that many vendors are trying to fake the soup. They are almost as identical as the real one. I thought I've always eat the real thing until a year ago where I was served the REAL, as in the real fin that was 'cut'. I can only tell you one thing, 70% of the fins that are sold in the market are fake. :)

people need to respect others cultures and heritages.

there was a big controversy a while ago, the native americans wanted to kill whales in the puget sound but the animal lovers wouldnt let them, so they took it to the court, and the court ruled that the native americans can kill whales with certain restrictions(i forgot what they are)because it is a part of their heritage.

the same thing should be applied here, its not like these people eat shark fin soup everyday and you dont see them in the freezer at safeway, it is an exotic meat, and damn expensive at that. from what ive known, shark fins are only eaten on special occasions such as chinese new year, so please respect that fact and their culture

<< So if people farmed sharks, cut off their fins, and dumped the rest in the trash it would be peachy keen to you? Right.................. >>

No, I don't think most people would be keen with this, but at least it wouldn't put pressure on the eco-system. Besides, if the sharks were commercially raised, companies would NEVER throw away the rest. They would take the carcas and at the very least grind it up for cat food or hot dogs. The only reason it isn't done in commercial fishing is that hauling a dead fish to shore in a boat costs money, and it may be economically more viable to simply leave the carcas at sea.

I'm all for the humane treatment of animals, but killing something is killing something. Lets not kid ourselves here.

Well, the environment issue is a totally different issue...............

I just LMAO at all the people screaming, "The poor fishies!! You're hurting them!!" If they only knew how most mainstream livestock suffer on a daily basis until they get their heads lopped off...................

I wonder what the soup would taste like without the shark fin. I like the broth as it is. I personally don't care for the fin part, it tastes and feels like vermicelli, which is like a buck a package.

Why do some people keep moaning that sharks are killed for their fins? That just doesn't make business sense. They sell shark fillets and steaks at your local grocery stores!

I never had shark fin soup, but I grilled some shark steaks. I am not interested in eating tiger or bear paws because I believe it is just a chinese mythical nonsense (or you may say a 'tradition'. Some traditions are nothing but craps).

What's the great deal about shark? Can I cut you apart and feed it to a lion? oh wait do you hunt? Can I shoot you?

For all that you know, what you are eating might not even be real shark fin!!! I have known an old man who manufactures fake shark fin material and sell em to restaurants for very cheap. Heard it tastes the same. The restaurant uses a minimal amount of the real stuff, and put tons of the fake stuff. Bwahaha...

<<What about killing cows for their meat?? Do you think they love to be slaughtered?? >>

You don't cut the hams off the cow and put it back in the pasture to bleed to death. We actually make use of the whole cow.

Catching a poor shark, cutting its fins off, then throwing it back in is ridiculous. If they were using the whole shark, and in the process also used the fins for soup, fine.
Otherwise, it shouldn't happen.

i've tried it, its ok but not worth it in my opinion, and until sharks start being farmed i'm not inclined to support their slaughter for just their fins. unlike cows which are herbivours, sharks are carnivours, and generally at the top of the food chain meaning their numbers aren't that great to begin with:p i can easily do without eating something thats value is mainly cultural/prestige etc. it wouldn't be so expensive if sharks were plentiful. i'm pretty sure i've had immitation too, good enough substitute, still tastes good:p

bullsh*t, these indians need to get a clue. in some desperate attempt to hold on to their culture they need to slaughter innocent whales. in the past they did it to survive, now its just for kicks. culture has its limits.

hehe, jus correcting you, hams are from a pig not a cow, and yes he's right they use the whole cow, and about killing them slowly , etc, i've seen it been done, they quickly slit their throat and let the blood come out.

God put animals on the earth for us to eat, for Chrissake'. They aren't people, human or anything else. You all have read (and believed) way too much science fiction. I wanna HAMMBURGER!!! And a PIZZA! And a red juicy STEAK!!
Jeepers Creepers.

I agree with clarkmo, they're animals, they're food, eat and enjoy while you can, because i guarantee sharks will outlive the human race,

Because making animals out of tofu is to hard ;)

You heard they taste the same?? THEY ARE ALMOST THE SAME. Tasted both fake and real ones. I can safely say that 70% of the shark fins sold outside are fake. :)
