Are you 14?

No, are you?
Years ago the only thing before the movies were previews. I think the first time I saw a commercial before a movie in roughly 94 in LA while on a soccer trip in college.

Yes, I am old and remember a time where there weren't sh!tloads of inane advertisements before the main show.

Even worse is the damn product placement in the movies now days, man that shyte really grinds my gears!!!

Then you just must not pay very much attention. They have only been doing the commercials before movies for about the last 4-5 years. Before that the only commercials where the slides that went on before the previews started.

why even bother going at all when you can rent the dvd like 3-6 months later and watch it in the comfort of your own home?

Well for certain movies you need to see them on the big screen and some people don't have that luxury at home.

Other than that unless its a really good flick there is no point.

no you don't. i watch 90% or more of the movies i rent on my 20" widescreen (and before that 19") lcd monitor. i don't miss the large theater screen, the sticky floors, the annoying people, etc at all.

that's a subjective call. There are some movies that are much more enjoyable on the big screen. Keep in mind I'm talking about if you get the perfect movie experience... no children, no cell phones, and no stupid people who don't pick up after themselves.

For the past few times, really only had problems w/ the last item. Granted I've only been to the theaters about 3-4 times this year.

i haven't been to a theater since the 1st lord of the rings movie came out and the only reason i went then was because some friends wanted to go. before that it was probably whent he 1st matrix movie came out. i actually went to see it 3 times at the theater.

It's too bad you don't have one of these next to you. Six bucks for an evening show, no commercials, you can order *real* food and have it delivered to you, plus picture+sound are just awesome.

wow ^^ so it's like a restaurant with movies

Yeah, I prefer to go to Studio Movie Grill (sounds like the same thing) for social movies. I took the wife to Clerks II a few weeks ago. Arrive, buy a ticket (~$8, I think), sit at the bar and have a few drinks, they call your movie, you walk in (didn't even have to show them the ticket), grab one of those flashy-LED things, and pick a table (many are built for 2). This is about 5-10 mins before the movie starts. Waiters come by and take you orders. Movie starts - no commercials, just previews (Snakes on a Plane - entire audience yells "Mutha-fvcking snakes on a mutha-fvcking plane!"). A few minutes later, waiters semi-quietly bring you your orders. Use the flashy LED if you need to get their attention for anything else. 20 minutes before the movie ends, they come around with a "last-call" for drinks and orders. They leave a bill, you pay after the movie. Go home. Have the sex0rs.

Not a bad deal - you just don't want to go for "plot-intensive" movie, as the hustle of the waiters, etc could be somewhat distracting.

We'll definitely go see SoaP there.

i have one thing to say since i work at a movie theater:
if you show up early, that's your fault. show up on time and all you get is previews and the movie. early gets commercials, really early get the slide advertisements.

if it wasn't for free movie passes, I probably wouldn't go either. the ticket prices are high, and the food is expensive as all hell.

by the way, is it a national amusements theater, an AMC theater, or something else? I have never been to anything other than the National Amusement theaters in my town, so no clue how AMC operates their theaters.

With movies being released on DVD after a couple months, 60" HDTV's, 7.1 Surround Sound HTs... is there even a need to go to the movies anymore?

Commercials are a brand new invention at movies. At most you had a quick spot for whatever candy or drink was offered at the concession stand, then a couple previews for coming attractions. That was it. 2-5 minutes, tops.

Right... if you go in on time, good luck finding a seat that's not in the 1st 2 rows, and forget about sitting together if you went as a group.

Add to that the ability to order anything and everything, including a bride, via the internet, you might as well ask the question, "Is there even a need to leave the house anymore."

Just because you can do things at home, does not necessarily invalidate all reasons to do them elsewhere. I mean, I can polish the one-eyed gopher at home, too - but sometimes it's nice to get out of the house and do it in the restroom of a Wendy's once in a while. You know - atmosphere and all.

It has been this way for a number of years. Those commercials keep the exhibitor from having to raise the ticket/concession prices more often.

That pisses me off even more than commercials in theatres.

It's so bad that I endded up ripping the DVD's and re-encoded with the movie only on DVD's that I bought.

I HATE that. I bought the damned DVD, why the hell should I be forced to watch adds/previews on my own DVD?

Why should catalog DVDs remain region coded once they've been released in all regions and have been out of the movie theatres for years?
Hint: Money...

Nope, it just keeps the stockholders happy when you outperform expected revenues.

Create your own atmosphere! Ask family members to redeem tickets before entering your HT room, watch a few commercials before loading up the DVD Player, wear an usher uniform and tell grandma to STFU while the movie is playing!

if you go to an opening weekend showing of a hit movie.. sure that may be an issue.. but whats the hurry? wait a week, and go earlier on the weekends or to the late late showings... that is, if you cant go to a weekday showing.

actually the perfect atmosphere is one complete with theater seats and a projector instead of a tv unit.

Budgeting revenue for the movie industry (both the exhibition and distribution sides) is like throwing fvcking darts at a dartboard. You have a very vague range of revenue (based on past performance) to expect, though it could always be markedly better or worse than what you estimate depending on the quality/public interest of the product or just pure luck.

If you know a way to accurately (within a few million) and reliably predict the revenues of a theatre chain please stop by my work. Our CEO (with almost 40 years of experience in the industry), CFO, bankers, and equity partner would like to have a little chat with you.

You don't have to be old to remember that. I'm 24 and I know there weren't any ads before movies until maybe 3-4 years ago around here. The DVD ads are even worse.

I hate the anti-piracy messages more than the commercials. I've already paid for the movie! Talk about the worst placement.

QFT

Those, and the commercials that lie and say that marijuana funds terrorists are the most annoying ones.
