Being the good son that I am, I took my father to see the Friedlander exhibit at MOMA today. After 10 or 15 minutes of meandering about, I was standing in front of a rather interesting photo of some reflections in a small town, when I looked to my left to see none other than Natalie Portman standing a foot away from me admiring the same photograph. I finally forced myself to begin breathing again after I don't know how long, and decided to make a lame attempt at a joke jsut so I could say I spoke to her. So I turned to her and said that Friedlander has a great sense of humor, as there was a very old man with his left hand hanging directly in front of the reflection of a young ladies ass, while holding his wifes hand with the other. It wasn't very obvious, and probably an accident that only a perv like I would notice, but she laughed once she saw it. I introduced myself, and started rambling on about anything I could think of regarding photography. I also told her about a friend of mine who will be having an opening on Orchard St fairly soon.
After a couple of minutes her mother and father came by, so I gave her my business card and told her to email me if she was in town in a few weeks, and would be interested in attending the opening party. I know it's unlikely I'll ever hear from her, but she seemed interested enough in photography so I didn't think I was being too brash, even though we only spoke for a couple minutes.
I was rather shocked at how skinny she was IRL, but I hear it's common for actresses to look much thinner in person as the camera adds a few pounds. I guess it's true. She was also sporting the Sinead O'Conner short hair look, which was a bit shocking to see at first, but she can make anything look good.
I had a nice time with my father, and this only made the day that much cooler.
