I'm antisocial

Example:
A friend of mine was throwing a BBQ party type thing yesterday evening, and although I was not planning on staying to eat, I was going to hang around with my friend for a bit before I left.

People begin to show up, and everyone says their hellos, I meet a new person, we shake hands. That is the last word said to me by anyone until the time I left.

The entire time I cannot stop thinking about how much I want to leave. I don't dislike anyone there, everyone is having fun, except me. I just feel a huge need to be away from everyone. I felt very nervous and anxious.

So I just said I am going to leave and I walked out.
I can't help thinking it was very rude for me to just leave. I said a very short and to the point goodbye.
I don't think anyone there liked me anyway.
I can't go to parties, I cannot have fun with groups of people. It happens all the time.
It's very disheartening.

Sorry. Thanks for listening.

It happens... there are a lot of people that don't feel comfortable around others at times. The sooner you accept it, the better it will be overall.

I'm the same way. I have good friends, but I'm not the kind of person that hangs out often. I attribute my dislike of social situations to being related to my dislike of people. People simply tend to annoy me more than they overjoy me and since I usually think fairly logical... why would I want to be in an annoying situation? I wouldn't. Therefore why would I want to be around people?

I just can't help talking to people, esp after a few drinks

I still can't tolerate idiots, but i relish a clash of intellects, and i'm a complete sucker for human company ;)

alcohol would help but be careful not to get hooked on it and use it only as a cruch.

I would just keep forching yourself into those situations and eventually you might learn to like it.

I'm getting close to 30 and have always felt like that. I'm not sure if geeks feel that ways because they're geeks, or people are geeks because they feel that way.

I think that's your problem, there. You're anti-social because you think that people don't like you and people may not like you because you're anti-social.

OP: are you like me, where you can be in the middle of a crowd and feel alone. But with one friend in an empty room, you don't?

Next time, how about you throw the party and invite only people you're comfortable with. I find that if I already know more than half the people at a party I have a much better time.

I'm the same way. I hate being around large groups of people and the same thing always happens to me. People will talk with me for a few minutes, things die off, and I'm so bored all I can think about is leaving. Yet I'm forced to go to these kinds of things at least once a month. It's easier once you're married, but it still sucks.

Meanwhile, everyone is gathering around the guy with the 1000 lawncare and vacation tales that make me want to stick a fork in my eye.

What happen to college parties where women would take their tops off after 30 minutes :|

I am just as anti-social and don't like it but I just accept it as a fact of life. The way I see it, it's just who I am and taking a drug for that is like taking a drug for being taller than other people. We can't all be charismatic socially adept.

For me when I am around alot of new people I just don't have the arsenal of "chit chat" alot of people seem to carry around. Things like sports, American Idol, celebrity gossip, current music... I don't pay attention to any of that stuff and I really don't care to so when I meet new people who like to talk about those things I have just nothing to say to them.

I could talk for hours! It's like the one Circuit City employee who stopped me while I was wearing my "Original Gankstas" shirt so he could talk to me about WoW. :p

Yes. One on one, I am confident, cool, and I can talk you ear off.
Get a bunch of people together, and I clam up.
I don't like it at all.

I drink plenty...lol. Trust me I don't need any more booze.
I just think there is something wrong with me. I am sure I have more than one thing malfunctioning up in the old noggin.
