When I set my brake if I try and go anywhere it won't budge unless I really give the gas, first clue I have it set. If I haven't noticed the idiot light.

I've driven around for maybe 20 seconds with the e-brake on only because I didn't engage it all the way (didn't pull it hard enough), so maybe it was like half engaged. It's difficult to tell when your e-brake is engaged like that and I only knew cuz I saw the light in time. Other than that, yea, if it's fully engaged, it's pretty obvious as I never gas out of my tight parking spot, and if my car isn't budging I know it's engaged.

majority of the reason you use the hand brake in an automatic is to relieve the park pin from the weight of the vehicle. just because putting the car in park makes it stop rolling downhill doesnt make it safe. that pin can only take so much stress, and if youre parking on inclines more than flat then you need to use the e brake to keept that pin from wearing out and snapping.

Also, if you don't use your parking brake all the time, when you park on a hill and decide that you "need it this time" ... it might decide that it likes where it is, and will seize up on you.

Plus, if you think that lovely lurch in either direction when you stop and take your foot off the brake is a good thing, you might be a complete moron as well.

And finally, if I'm parked and some blonde ditz in Daddy's SUV manages to smack into me while applying her makeup and texting her "BFF" - I'd much rather have the brakes take the wallop than the transmission.

QFT...I've seen several cars that were just parked on an incline, & on the transmission "parking pawl", and had to have someone hook onto their car to relieve the pressure to get them out of park...I've also seen a couple where the idiot tried to force the car out of park, and broke or damaged things...The parking pawl is designed ONLY to keep the transmission in neutral, and as a secondary safety device after the parking brake...

It is. A lot of people here though don't understand that, think they've got discs and drums in the rear, LOL.

Reading through this thread, A lot of you guys should stick to computers, and not pretend you know stuff about cars. ;)

This quoted post especially. Don't be so sure of yourself when you obviously have no CLUE what you are talking about. I can tell you 3 cars that I have personally worked on that have this system you claim does not exist.

Please people, do not put in your $.02 in a car thread unless you know what you are talking about. Or at least put some sort of disclaimer you are not 100% sure. Cars are much more diverse than computers, so making asinine posts are much easier to get called out on.

But then how could they bench-race their Mom's Camry?

LOL, good point. I guess the whole nature of this forum is to pretend you are an expert and feel good about yourself from cutting down others. It really is sad, and I could have sworn it was not like this back when I joined. Then again, A lot has changed in seven years.
