I thought handbrake was just mechanical override for rear hydraulic brake but still using the same shoes/pads.

Uhh, guys. The hand brake operates the rear brakes, the same brakes that are applied when you press the brake pedal at the floor.
Yeah, I was about to chime in and ask what car he owns that has 2 sets of rear brakes, one for the handbrake and the regular one.

Thats not a reason to drive a manual, if anything its a reason to drive an automatic. In an automatic, you rarely need the hand brake, thus you get used to simply not using it. Usually, its mechanics, who work on your car and for some reason set the hand brake even though they are working in a perfectly level shop, who cause the problem.

I just got my handbrake shoes replaced this weekend, along with my rear brakes. After a year of not having a handbrake, I forgot to release it before driving home from work.![]()

I've never used a handbrake...or a parking brake. I just got my brakes done the other day, and the tech that parked the car, set the handbrake. Fortunately, I caught it right away.

Parking brakes take the pressure off the trans. Dont you notice the little wobble your car does when you park?
BTW, OP there are no "handbrake shoes." The handbrake engages your brakes manually.

With drum-rear cars, it is. An engineer at GM explaind it to me once, but I cna't remember the details, basically using a disc brake as a parking break has certain inherent issues.

I hate it when people drive my car and forget to release the brake. I mean how hard is it to be prudent about doing a few quick checks before driving off?
Check the mirrors, rear view mirror, look at the gauges (make sure there's enough gas if you're driving > 30 miles), put car in gear, let go of parking brake, drive.
It's not hard at all and I'm talking about in any car or van (most vans have a step brake on the left side near the driver's door).
How much did the repairs cost, OP?
