I just got my handbrake shoes replaced this weekend, along with my rear brakes. After a year of not having a handbrake, I forgot to release it before driving home from work. :(

Hmm I've never seen a car without a handbrake? Anyway, the same thing once happened to my mother with my granddad's car. The garage must've smelled like purgatory.

I had a handbrake, but it didn't work because the pads were worn out since I bought the Jeep. I didn't replace them because the mechanic said to just do it when I got the brakes done.

I've never used a handbrake...or a parking brake. I just got my brakes done the other day, and the tech that parked the car, set the handbrake. Fortunately, I caught it right away.

That's similar to what happened to my car... I got my brakes changed, along with the parking brake. So I set it, and go into the house... Then someone in my family decided to drive it with it on for at least 30 miles... So I learned to never set the parking brake unless I'm on a hill now (bad habit yes, I would like to start using the parking brake again, but I rather not.)

Houston is flat. I didn't need to use it at all!

Hmm.. I didn't see a handbrake light at all..

Happen to me a few times in an automatic. Never in a manual though coz the car wouldn't move without setting it off.

I think it's one of the things I check for every time I get in or move the car. I put my hand and just press the button on it to make sure it's not engaged.

my "hand brake" is a foot pedal, and if i forget to disengage it the truck doesnt move. but im pretty sure its the same as my back drums, since its a manual cable override to the calipers on the rear brakes. just like damn near every car ive ever had. what kind of cars have separate pads for the parking brake?

On my Grand Cherokee and also my dad's Crown Vic, the rotor has a drum built in, which the shoes push on. It makes no sense.

Uhh, guys. The hand brake operates the rear brakes, the same brakes that are applied when you press the brake pedal at the floor.

Yeah, I was about to chime in and ask what car he owns that has 2 sets of rear brakes, one for the handbrake and the regular one.

D'oh!

I've done that before (who hasn't) in other cars, but my Crown Vic won't move forward if I don't have the handbrake disengaged. Idiot-proof :D

Depends on the vehicle, some have an integrated system where the caliper pads or drum shoes perform both functions, others have a set of parking brake shoes inside the rotor which are independent from the service brake, and on larger trucks with rear hydraulic operated drums or rotors they have a parking brake drum between the transmission and rear driveshaft.

Porsche, Saab, etc... Plenty of cars have disc in the rear with a drum setup in the center of the rotor for the E-Brake. I think it is mostly older cars.

Drum brakes a self energizing in one direction, makes them good handbrakes. It's possible he has a small seperate drum for his handbrake if his car has disc brakes for the rear wheels.

Couldn't you tell you had the brake set? I mean, it would take more gas to move, engine would work harder.... Also, what about the idiot light?

When I set my brake if I try and go anywhere it won't budge unless I really give the gas, first clue I have it set. If I haven't noticed the idiot light.

Possible? I bought the shoes myself!

Our new honda has that setup, a small drum built into the rear rotor for parking only.

My parking break releases automatically when put in gear, so this does not happen to me thankfully, otherwise I'm sure I'd leave it on.

Not all of them. On my truck, it has rear disks - the handbrake is a separate assembly inside a drum mounted behind the rotor. They do have to be replaced and maintained separately - the main cable snapped once a while back and the shoes came loose inside the drum, made a horrible scraping noise and damaged the axle. The dealership replaced everything for free.

Uhhh, how can you not notice that your vehicle is driving differently and not recognize that the e-brake is engaged?
