Damn, sorry! I bet it's not "SLI certified" either :(. I guess I'm all out of oompa-loompas.

Don't get the WD 500GB. Get the 640GB drive instead.

Get the Gigabyte EP45-DS3L instead of the MSI board.

You are saving a whopping $20 getting the smaller SLOWER hard drive. The 640GB is the best bargain going for price vs performance. Also, that power supply is pretty low quality. Invest in a 500W Corsair or something similar.

You can save some money by looking around the FS/T forum for deals on some of your parts.

I find it is often cheaper to do things right the first time.

Sorry Roguestar, you linked up "G.Skill" memory. :p

What's wrong with G.Skill? I used it in my build like 2 years ago and didn't have any problems. Wondering if I should be more wary of them.

After two years of no problems, I wouldn't worry about your memory.

Not thinking of my current memory. Thinking of when I go to build a new rig in 3-6 months.

He quoted it and joked because I didn't line up some munchkin RAM, not because there's anything wrong with G.Skill.

Well, that's your and Blain's fault for making the mistake of posting anything on here that isn't serious. This forum is only for serious users building serious computers dedicated to serious benchmarking, who understand that playing games or using a computer for video-editing or any other real world application is a serious waste of time. Seriously, get serious.

"non-SLI certified G.Skill RAM" - gah - I wish you would have told me about that earlier. Now I have to throw away my 8GB of G.Skill, and I should probably throw away my entire rig too, I'm sure it's been contaminated by that lousy memory

Jebus I didn't get the joke no need to go on a rant : ( I hardly ever run benchmarks, and never really cared what the results were.

How much are you asking for your, now infected parts? :)

Sorry, I wasn't trying to bag on you. I was seizing a chance to dig at Roguestar and Blain for being smartasses. Because I obviously am not.

I don't know - I would need a way to get the RAM out without sullying my hands by touching the filth. I figured the G.Skill was a good substitute for "performance gaming RAM" because it had a pretty blue box with a sticker, obviously higher performance. Now I just feel betrayed. If it's not SLI-certified it just can't perform as well, right?

Don't feel betrayed, just look at it as an educational expense.

Make sure next time your RAM at least has lights on it. I wouldn't get anything less than 16GB of DDR4 for future-proofing.

Well, I got all my parts. Does anyone know of a good step by step tutorial on how to put my computer together? I've done it a couple times before, but I want to make sure I still know everything.

mechBgon's guide to putting a computer together is still relevant even though some slots have changed; it's all much more simple than you'd think. RAM is slotted to only go in one way, CPUs just drop into the slot if they're aligned right and there's no way you could accidentally plug a hard drive in to where the RAM is meant to go. Everything is generally colour-coded, and moulded to only fit in one way. Just take a day to set aside to take your time over it, then read the motherboard manual and the case manual about installation and you'll be fine.

Great man thanks a lot for your help!

Do I really need the "lube"/cooling gel for my CPU? Should I go get that?

Well, it is sometimes referred to as thermal grease.

But I do wonder if it helps the bits and bytes get in and out of there any faster. The same reason you don't want any SATA cables to be kinked - the data gets backed up like in a hose, and the added pressure can cause memory leaks :D

Cool, I picked up some Silver Thermal Coolant. Now I'm just waiting for my ram... hurry up RAM! Any advice before setting up my comp? Watch out for kinks.
