hope it doesn't collapse on top of you, is it dangerous? could you suffocate with all of that snow pinning you down?

Any updates???

Already heard one story about how people died when the snow cave collapsed. They built it along the interstate they got trapped on.

I don't see how the ambient temp inside the cave could ever get above 32F, so I guess this wouldn't be something I would look forward to unless I was forced.

Next time I'm lost in the woods in sub-freezing winds It'll be the time to try it.

honestly, sleeping outside in the winter isn't so bad. I've done it at least five or six times, in tents, snow shelters, out in the open, alone, and in groups.

*tip* group up with some snow bunnies and spend the night up on a ski hill, the night sky is bee-autiful :p

Sorry I couldn't post earlier.
The whole night went great! I was nice and warm, and got down to my t-shirt and boxers in my sleeping bag. Those of you who have never winter camped before would be surprised as to how warm it can get. I fell asleep soon after entering, and slept until about 10! It was very comfy. I took some pictures. Only a couple of them are from when I was sleeping in it, and from last night. A took a majority of them this morning after getting out to get better lighting. My dog even went inside with me and he liked it, and didn't want to go back out.

To make this shelter I shoveled for about an hour to make a big pile. I then carve out the entire inside. After it was hollowed out, I completely filled out the entrance with another pile. (The lower section, which is the entrance, seen to the left of the shelter) After this second, smaller pile hardened, I then carved it out to make a longer tunneled entrance that didn't go straight into the sleeping area. This was to protect from some loss of heat.

I did a lot of things here that I normally wouldn't have done if I was not in my backyard with my parents just inside. 1.) The interior walls were not smoothed out enough, and were not as hardened as I would have liked. 2.) The walls are much thinner than they should be so that I would be able to get out since I was alone in it. 3.) The sleeping area is not raised. 4.) I let my boots and other snow gear sit out in the shelter. Normally, you should put your boots and gloves inside the sleeping bag with you to keep them warm.
I know I probably made some other mistakes, but nothing that would have put my life at risk.

I have gone winter camping on several ocassions, in several isolated locations, with several forms of shelters, and I have to say, this was one of my favorites. Mabye it was because I was allowed to get sloppy since it was just in backyard, but this night was much more comfy then most nights I have had while winter camping.

As promised, here are some of the pics:
This was taken last night
This is a good overall shot of it
The shovel to the left did most of the work
The tunnel that leads inside
The tunnel then turns to the right to go into it
After some crawling, we're in!
This was taken while I was in the bag right before I went to sleep
I even made a little room light with a maglite! To the right of it, I put my military shovel in a peephole
My bag!
I spy a tree through one of the peepholes!
Now, heading back out
Keep crawling!
When I was taking the pics, someone was trying to shovel me in!
My dog even got in on the action this morning!
I think he sees something through a peephole!
And finally, he decides to come back out
