ok, so it's like this... in another thread i started a few days back, i was asking for opinions about the rio one mp3 player. the main reason i liked it was becuz it support memory expansion by smartmedia cards, as opposed to the proprietary memory the newer rio's use. a few ppl pointed out that they had a problem with the battery cover breaking, and the lcd is not backlit. so i did some research and it seems the build quality of the rio one isn't all that great (i've read about ppl having to rma their rio three times). a few ppl recommended the nomad. it seems to have the features i liked about the rio, plus a little extra. only thing about the nomad is that it's a little more expensive (but i think it's justifiable w/the fm tuner & wired remote & backlit lcd). anyone have warnings against the nomad? otherwise, i am gonna take the plunge!!! ;)

i was very caught up between the nomad ii and the iic. at first, i really wanted the iic, becuz of the onboard memory. also, at first i read the iic supported 128mb sm cards, while the ii only supported 64mb max. but upon further research, i discovered the ii has a firmware upgrade that will allow it to use 128mb sm cards. also, the ii has the fm tuner, as well as the wired remote. so now i am leaning towards the ii, rather then the iic (even tho the iic is a little cheaper). did these options affect ur decision to buy the iic?

MediaFour is coming along nicely. Also now that the ipod shipped the 10g model, the 5g's are dropping in price...

I think it was out of stock, actually. :)

That's weird. I have a IIc that required a firmware upgrade to use 128MB SD cards. It has no built-in radio nor the remote, though.

Go for the one with radio and remote. They'll come in handy, especially when you get sick of your songs.

what bout the original 6gb nomad jukebox, its about 160 bucks brand new on ebay.
to me memory cards just isnt worth it.
i would rather get a netmd if i was planning to buy a memory card based player, at least the minidiscs are cheap.

the 6gb nomad is kinda big. i haven't thought about the md tho. i guess reason being is the unit itself is kinda costly. the nomad ii is less than $100. i already have some sm cards for my digital camera, so that's not really an issue for me. besides... sm card are among the cheapest of the removable media (sm, cf, mmc, sd, etc) :p

Heya Spanky. Here's what I wrote a while ago in response to another Nomad II thread.

The Nomad II handles VBR and 320 kbps MP3s great - detects them and all. I've upgraded the firmware to the latest revision with 128MB SmartMedia card and WMA support and will be using WMA for the superior quality/size ratio wherever possible.

The Nomad IIc specifically does NOT come with headphones where I've tried to buy it. Be wary of this fact - they're actually pretty good behind-the-head style headphones at that. The IIc also does NOT come with the wire remote, which is pretty neat. The Nomad II (note no c) comes with these two accessories.

MP3 playback is superb, I've listened to the Nike player and this beats the hell out of it (maybe it's a difference in between headphones, though). FM reception is a bit weak on the Nomad II (not included on the IIc) but decent. One fully charged AA battery runs the player for ~10 hours. Software install went flawlessly on my system (Win2k SP2) and within 20 minutes of bringing home the package I was out the door with songs on the SM card. USB transfer speed is quick, about 10 seconds per 5-6MB file. I intend to throw a 128MB card in there ASAP and live very happily with my Nomad II.

Who wants to bother with a MP3 player with lousy moving parts and skipping? Go solid state and go golden. :)

I've had a Nomad II for two years and it is very buggy. On mine, the volume control on the remote and the player are broken. I have to use headphones with a volume control and if I want to adjust the player's volume, I have to open it up and short two points where the button used to be. I have also seen the firmware upgrades erase themselves when you take the battery out for extended periods.

But still a cool MP3 player for it's age. Seems to do everything. :)

mp3.com was having a promotion where you got a free nomad II with the purchase of $50 worth of mp3's

ipod, buying flash memory still sucks. sound quality from many of the tiny players kinda stinks oddly enough:p nomad jukebox 3 is out if you want 20GB:p up to 18hours playback not bad at all. i'd rahter go ipod though.

I have a Nomad IIc. It is pretty cool except I can't get it to work with windows media player and I don't know if it can play WMA's or Audible. If I ever get another one, I'll make sure it can do both as well.

I have a nomad II 0mb + 128mb SM. I use it everyday, you won't be disappointed. Even WMA files at 192 kb play great.
