I'm a PC guy, but the iPad 2 is amazing.

Ok, just to hopefully quell some of the "it can't take the place of my computer" responses that seem to pop into every post; no, I agree....it can't take the place of my computer. That's not why we purchased it. But for what we DID purchase it for, this thing is just awesome.

My wife mainly wanted it to stream media such as Netflix, her favorite TV shows from networks such as ABC (which she usually had to tie up my computer doing...boo), surf the internet from anywhere in the house or anywhere with wireless, use it as an ereader, use the recipe apps, etc. etc. etc. The iPad is brilliant at all of those in my opinion.

On top of that, my son and I are absolutely ADDICTED to Garageband. What a freaking BRILLIANT app!

We are loving it so far, and we've just begun to scratch the surface on what all we can do with it. No, it cannot take the place of a laptop or computer (at least for me), but it was definitely worth the purchase for my family. I'd actually like to have another one, but definitely can't justify THAT.

While it can't replace a full computer for most, it definitely has its place for certain people/families. If you want to spend even more money for streams, you can give Hulu+ a go. Only worth it if there's a decent amount of shows on Hulu that you can't get on Netflix, or if you absolutely must be up to date on those shows.

And, if you're interested and didn't know yet, you can buy video out adapters so you or your wife can play Netflix from the ipad but display through the TV. Really only useful if you don't have something that CAN stream to your TV, or if you're taking it with you on a trip where you'll have TV/wifi access. I usually have a video out cable when I visit my parents so we can watch netflix all together.

That is very true Stu. Hey, I'm a poet. Picking up a first gen iPad could be a good idea as a second device.

Can anyone that owns both give some feedback on the performance difference in apps such as Garageband?

I have a friend with a first generation iPad and he said that it's a little slower but it works fine. Maybe I could ask about more specific differences that he noticed when he used GarageBand on my iPad 2.

Performance difference between iPad 1 and iPad 2 is stark if you've used the iPad 2 for a good while and you come back to the iPad 1. It's like trying to walk again after you jog.

I am a pc guy too but I love my iPad 2! I use it everyday and haven't touched my laptop over a week. I love FaceTime except it has some bugs.

ipod touch with camera would be a wiser choice. and you can JB it.

or iphone 4 as ipod touch.

my kid has a ipad1,ipod touch (Camera), and iphone 3g/2g but prefers the retina display/large display (4.5 years old, talk about spoiled).

facetime has always been buggy man. sometimes you get no pic and have to reboot. i think it has to do with BG apps locking sound/camera.

Just for context, I've been around since before personal computers existed..

I think the iPad is an interesting development in the history of tech for two reasons.

1. It's an Apple product that's well priced compared to it's competition.

2. It's an Apple product with a much larger library of apps than it's competition.

Apple has always made innovative, cool products. But they never got on top of the pc market because of cost and limited apps compared to Windows/Dos pcs.

The iPad changes that. Like the Nintendo Wii, everybody wants one.

iPhone?

The iPhone hasn't taken off much? What?

Yea, that was what I was thinking. It has redefined an entire industry. And even if it doesn't have the largest marketshare, it does have the largest mindshare, easily. It is just like with the iPod before it, people didn't go into stores to buy MP3 players, they went to buy iPods, even if they weren't from Apple. iPod became synonomous (sp?) with that little box in your pocket that holds all your music.

Before the iPhone, name for me please a popular phone with an all touch interaction paradigm whose predominant feature was a large touch screen.

Name for me please the unified marketplaces, available on phones where users could easily find apps for their devices. Where developers could easily get their apps out to customers, all of them, at once.

Demonstrate for me please, the superb internet experience available on these devices.

Yea, you're right, the iPhone hasn't taken off at all. I am assuming that you were trying to make some other point, but I mean... wow, that is like saying that Windows hasn't taken off because Snow Leopard costs $29.

I sold my ipad2 and went back to the original. I had more hopes for the camera but we'll see what the next crop of tablets bring.

Well, I certainly didn't say "the iPhone hasn't taken off at all".

And I most certainly didn't mean to say "the original iPhone didn't take off".

What it did was refreshing the industry, not reinvent it. It became the de facto, and everything that came after it had to go with the same design. The iPhone was most certainly not the first device with a touchscreen, nor was it the first device with a touch OS. It was merely the first device to combine those two elements right.

However, that was the first iPhone. I didn't state "iPhone" as in "the very first iPhone". I meant "iPhone" as a platform, or a device platform, just like "iPad" can be used as a device platform. As a device platform, the iPhone... isn't expanding its user base as fast as the iPad. And that was what I meant by "hasn't taken off much".

Since you brought up the internet experience, I'm sorry to inform that just a few days ago, Opera Mobile 11 claimed the performance crown in the mobile browser sector. It scrolls and zooms just as smooth as Mobile Safari, but without any kind of obtrusive checkerboard pattern, and it supports the same HTML5 contents that Mobile Safari supports. Whether Opera Mobile is a better browser is very much up for debate, but if anything, I personally think it's a huge step forward in terms of performance, and it's very competitive with Mobile Safari.

I wouldn't want to drag this thread longer since it's about the iPad, and more specifically, the iPad 2, but if you would like to discuss iPhone growth, I'm quite certain there are a number of users who have... a lot to say about it.

P.S.: If you ask me, though, I personally love the iPhone and the iOS platform as a whole. However, lately, I have felt that Apple has slept on its laurels with regards to software, specifically for the iPhone, and other companies are catching up. And no offense intended, but I think that it's quite important to pay attention to the iPhone as a platform compared to other devices competing with it, rather than dwelling on the achievements of the past.

The iPad 2 is certainly tempting, but I don't see that many advantages over my 4th gen iPod Touch. Sure, you can get it with 3G, but I really can't afford a 3G plan on top of all the other things I have to pay for. Wi-Fi is enough for me and the iPod Touch is brilliant. I use this freakin' thing every single day. What really sold me on the iPod Touch was that Retina Display, and it's really a shame that they couldn't do that on the iPad 2. Here's to hoping they get it together for the iPad 3!

They are on track to sell something like 60 million iPhone 4s, they have sold something like 15m iPads. I think that the iPhone as a platform is doing just fine. And going from 0-whatever will yield a higher percentage of growth than going from 100m-whatever

I was talking about past internet experiences. The mobile IE available on WinMo devices, or the browser on BBs. The state of mobile browsing pre-iPhone. It makes perfect sense that nowadays we have a wide variety of really great browsers available, but I was talking about before the iPhone.

I concur. And you are right, the iPad 2 is so hot right now.

I am not sure why you think that this would offend me, but whatever. The successes of Apple's competitors makes it so that Apple has to work harder. Google is advancing at a prodigious rate with regards to their software, and have really come a long way, and WinPho7, for all its flaws, looks like it could be a great platform, you know if we could ever get the update for it.

I disagree to a certain extent that they have been resting on their laurels, I would say that certain things have lagged behind, namely notifications, but they are trying to advance iOS as a whole at a steady pace, and I think that we will see something great for iOS 5 at WWDC.

I have one BIG con for hte iPad: no flash.

Everyone mentions this, and maybe it does affect you, but there are SO few times this has been a problem for me I could literally count on one hand.

Essentially all video sites worth visiting are in HTML5 now.

What pages are you going to that don't have flash?

I watch plenty of videos on all sorts of sites, I would like to have the ability to see megavideo, dailymotion, etc. videos on the iPad, not just youtube

Have you gone into a store to confirm that you cannot view the videos on those sites?

Have you gone into a store to confirm that you can view them on another tablet? Because last I heard (and this may have changed) there is no Flash on anyone else's tablet either.

The Motorola XOOM and Samsung Galaxy Tab do have Flash 10.2 support.

Though contents beyond 360p are arguably not viewable, most videos at least play back without major issues. And scrolling or zooming isn't choppy anymore with Opera Mobile 11, so at this point, Adobe and Opera have finally proved that there is a solution for Flash on mobile devices that doesn't run slow or kill battery life.

It took a whole year for that to happen, though.
