Wow. That sucks.

I agree with others, except that if you're going to pursue the new job more, execute that asap and only try to get your old job back when you know you're done, so you don't jerk them around by quitting twice (if they agreed to take you back.) Tell them you believed you had an opportunity of a lifetime that you couldn't refuse or something, but in the 11th hour it fell through for some reason, and that it had not been a goal to leave your current company.

This sounds like the beginning of pretty much every success story ever told. "So, it all started the day I accidentally quit my job..."
.

agreed. Far too many people fall for the "security trap." I think the naysayers calling you a dummy for not coasting safely from one thankless robot job to the next are too often consumed by fear.

The worst would have been to go from this shitty job to that shitty job, just because you thought it was safe. Now you are in the position you absolutely need to be in: a legitimate need. Humans work far better when tossed up against a wall.

Let your brain work for once. Relax a bit and don't think that you are in any way desperate.

Again, I suggest a peaty whiskey every evening.

You keep telling him to drink whiskey, are you an alcoholic or something? How is drinking going to help him write cover letter and edit his resume? lol

Often times we hear what we want to hear. Perhaps you were so gung-ho about the new job that you thought you heard a job offer when there really wasn't. Anyway, my only advice is to record everything. Often the phone is the means of communication and a paper trail cannot always be had. Using your landline or get an record app for your cell phone to make sure everything said is as stated true and real.

in the end, even if there is a paper trail. if he didn't sign anything (and even then) it doesn't really mean anything.

If you can't have an ounce or two of wiskey a night to wind down after dinner and not fall into drunken hysterics, then you are a weak girly man.

It's also because he is in Scotland, where it's called dessert.

Ouch! I'm sure it will work out better for you in the end.

Don't companies do signed offer letters in the UK? I've never put in a resignation without first signing an offer letter with a written start date.

I don't know if England/Scotland has at will employment, but in the U.S. the paper wouldn't even help in an employment at will state. You can have all the offer letters in the world and show up your first day, and they can tell you "thanks but no thanks". You might get severance if their employee handbook or any documentation they've sent you mentions it, but otherwise you're pretty much SOL.

Only about a third of US states are at will though.

I was starting to bristle and think over legal remedies to suggest when I saw that you aren't from the US. :/

What? I think you meant to say, "Every state in the United States of America is 'at will' though there are some exceptions."

True, but in this context the implied contract states might recognize his situation as an employment agreement and therefore the employment could not be terminated without cause or process. At least that's how I've understood this in the past, I recall you are an HR person so you have more specific knowledge than me.

I think a lot of porn starts this way too.

You're good either way.

And in every porn movie, you end up getting fucked.

Just about anyone with over 5,000 posts on one site probably has contacts that could let them move in to help get them back on their feet. I only have about 1,500 posts on a site over at Rage3D forums. So from my perspective your 6k+ posts is awesome, if not rent free worthy then rent for some cleaning & other work at your temporary new home.

no update yet. my CV was pretty much up to date, i only had to add a couple lines; have applied for about a dozen jobs that i don't want (call center B2C for BT, Virgin, Lloyds bank, etc), haven't found anything remotely interesting.

Josh, my post count won't get me a job. Also, this is EU, they don't believe in "giving smart people a chance", you'll be given consideration based on your previous job, not your personal talents; being smart and well educated in not considered a major asset here.

Thats like the US as well. No one cares about what you can do, only if youre friends with the boss.

Not in my (limited) experience. Maybe if you work in a bullshit industry in a company that's coasting on past success?

My advice: Get a part-time thing quick to get by while searching for a real job. Sometimes you have to get your hands dirty.

based on his post history, he's pretty sure white people are gangstalking him all the time

it's more psychopathic

Oh man I just went down memory lane there. I forgot all about his posts.

Damn - sometimes it sucks to be an empathetic soul trying to reach out to people over the internet. You can't help in the same way close friends and family can, especially when the individual in need of help is delusional. Most difficult people to convince they need to talk to a professional and figure things out.
