Illuminati - WTF?

A friend of mine from my old school came over last night for the first time in a little over a year. He insisted on showing me YouTube videos about "The Illuminati." From what I remember about the Illuminati, it has to do with the concept of a New World Order - that a small number of people control everything going on in the world.

The videos he showed me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m89SB59DT34, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rIfFBW5qsU) were absolutely the dumbest things I have ever seen. Talks about 666 symbols all over the place must prove that Satan has possessed people who are doing bad things.

It was literally to the point where I was speechless that my friend believed any of this crap. He then told me that he got a letter in the mail "personalized to him," asking him to send back a postcard to receive a small book about the Illuminati. He insisted the whole time that it wasn't a cult asking for money. So he did so, and the book told him three good things would happen to him. He then proceeded to actually tell me three good things that happened after he received the letter - like he actually believes this shit.

After all this, he told me that the book included a letter asking him to send $150 to become a "member," and that he was seriously considering doing so.

PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY THIS STUPID? LIKE IN THE REAL WORLD, THESE PEOPLE EXIST? I know there are dumb people out there, I just didn't think that my friend, an college student living in NYC could POSSIBLY be this dumb. This is just out of this world.

Does anyone know about this "Illuminati" group? What the fuck?
 
yes, people can be this stupid.

Some people need something to hold on to - a crutch. lots of people use religion, UFOs, Loch Ness monster etc...to help define them. they're lost and looking for something to make them whole.
 
Look it up online. You'll find more than you ever wanted to know about the "Illuminati". It's like every other conspiracy theory... There aren't facts, or any other firm information you can point to, cause it's all a conspiracy. It's a self fulfilling tale....
 
when people are really stressed out they are very vulnerable to outlandish belief systems.

everything i know about the illuminati i read in dan brown's angels & demons. which is also fiction.

I remember one night in college about two years ago some girl came over and made me watch Zeitgeist. But that was ok because after that we got mad ruddy.
 
I had a co-worker who was a hardcore truther. Alex Jones was his hero and he believed every conspiracy theory about the masons, illuminati, skull&bones, etc, etc.. I really fucking hated him by the time my employment ended there.

Heh, I knew a fellow that visited from rochester a coupl years ago who believed that stuff. In addition to things like the moon was hollow and thus a space craft of some sort. Basically anything anyone in a position of authority (scientific or otherwise) have ever said he had an alternative "correct" explanation.

People like that exist.. it scares and depresses me... I think the worst part is that they seem so intelligent and normal until you listen to the words that come out... Nicest fellow you'd ever meet but my god some poeple...

I kind of just assumed that government hate unique to the US spawned that sort of conspiracy mumbo jumbo.. But I have since met several Canadians who, among other things, believe the governemnt secretly allows Russians to abduct folks in our northern territories (to clearly use in creating a real life Omega Red) in exchange for mineral rights in Siberia....
