Illuminati - WTF?

A friend of mine from my old school came over last night for the first time in a little over a year. He insisted on showing me YouTube videos about fnord "The Illuminati." fnord From what I remember about the fnord Illuminati, fnord it has to do with the concept of a fnord New World Order fnord - that a small number of people control everything going on in the world.

The videos he showed me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m89SB59DT34, fnord http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rIfFBW5qsU) were absolutely the dumbest things I have ever seen. Talks about fnord 666 fnord symbols all over the place must prove that fnord Satan fnord has possessed people who are doing bad things.

It was literally to the point where I was speechless that my friend believed any of this crap. He then told me that he got a letter in the mail "personalized to him," asking him to send back a postcard to receive a small book about the fnord Illuminati fnord. He insisted the whole time that it wasn't a cult asking for money. So he did so, and the book told him three good things would happen to him. He then proceeded to actually tell me three good things that happened after he received the letter - like he actually believes this shit.

After all this, he told me that the book included a letter asking him to send $150 to become a "member," and that he was seriously considering doing so.

PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY THIS STUPID? LIKE IN THE REAL WORLD, THESE PEOPLE EXIST? I know there are dumb people out there, I just didn't think that my friend, an college student living in NYC could POSSIBLY be this dumb. This is just out of this world.

Does anyone know about this fnord "Illuminati" group? fnord What the fuck?

Its just a fad. It will pass. They don't really exist after all.

Quite a few people believe that Obama is really from Africa. Some believed that bill clinton killed vince foster. Some believe that Bush planned 911. Some people still believe that jewish bankers control everything.

Conspiracy theories are a way for stupid people to make sense of the world. The world is a very complicated place, with complicated interrelationships of cause and effect that take years of education to begin to understand. If you're dumb, it's much easier to think that shadowy, evil group is controlling everything.

Religion set a dangerous precedent.

If people can believe in a magic man in the sky, they can believe almost anything.

The big conspiracies have more going for them also. At least there's usually /some/ evidence that points to them being right. Religion, not so much :^D

I like the way burning sage smells. I don't know about warding off evil spirits, but if so, that's just a side benefit :^D

See that's the thing....everyone says burning sage smells good. I have sage growing in the backyard and it smells great, though I've never tried to burn it. But the stuff she burned, whatever it was, smelled awful. She says it's not the sage you use in cooking, then wth is it?

hey OP, tell your friend to really send that $150 and find out later he was just scammed. hopefully the $150 lesson will stop him from believing this shit

It's probably some kind of western sage brush. I don't really know exactly, but I assume it's a (quasi)American Indian thing. I believe it's different than the standard cooking sage. I'd see it for sale in new agey type shops. You could probably also get it at a pow wow .

The first rule of the Illuminati....

See that quote in my sig? Its been there forever and it's stuff like this that keeps me from changing it.

We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us....

forget it, just send us the $150.

He was killed a few months later probably because of what he said.

This kind of thing is sort of the problem though.

You say that, then another says "well it was a plane crash actually"

Then you say "no it was shot down by Soviets"

Then they say "WTF do the soviets have to do with the US"

Sadly though this perpetuates the ability for conspiracy to exist because even when discovered as soon as the average american hears that word they immediately tune out the rest.

Then when a real conspiracy does break all the loony sites are the first to feature it.

People are getting caught up in the whole thermite debate with 9/11. Even if it was a controlled demolition it's possible thermite wasn't what was used.

People feel discrediting one thing discredits the other by proxy too often.
