you know, these are just the ones that are caught. Imagine the real flush of the entire system. nothing will change unless the system changes. sad really.

I have never heard of cities leasing out the parking metres to a private firm before. And Morgan Stanley is in the parking metre business???

It makes me so happy, maybe we'll get a governor that can straighten out the budget so we can reopen the state parks. Scumbag. I hope he goes down hard and shares a cell with George Ryan.

The Federal prison system has become a retirement village for Illinois governors.

wow. they are having a press conferance about it.

seems he is a bigger dick then i thought. one of the top childrens hospitals in chicago was due $8million from the state. he told the top guy that he would release it for $50k "donation". the state released the money and the guy never gave the donation. so blagobitch tried his best to get back the $8 million. WTF!

LOL. Read the indictment. Some good stuff in there.

During the call, ROD BLAGOJEVICH's wife can be heard in the background telling ROD BLAGOJEVICH to tell Deputy Governor A "to hold up that f?-ing Cubs sh-t. . . f?- them.

This was Blagojevich and apparently his wife trying to get the Chicago Tribune to fire their editorial staff. They were going to hold up the Tribune selling the Cubs and Wrigley Field to do so.

I am happy the state of Illinois is cleaning up its act prior to my visit. I feel honoured that a state is so taken with my pending visit that it would indict a governor.

Not sure, perhaps they think they can squeeze more cash out of fines than the city does or do it more efficiently. Stricter enforcement would definably raise revenues and the fact that it's a non-gov agency doing it takes heat off the city. The city also would not be able to raise rates as aggressively as the contract provides for. Either way it is a decidedly safe investment for them and the 2nd time they've done it (leased the city owned parking garages a few years ago).

Expect rates to go up as much as 300%

..ha. and your obama is part of it's fabric.

Heard about this on the radio when I was driving to work this morning. I can't say I'm surprised. The ONE good thing about Blagojevich was the open road tolling, though I would have liked to see the tolls removed and the income come from some other source of tax.

And Daley is a crook. Instead of leasing parking meters to a private company that will just raise the meter rates, the city should have just increased the damn meter rates themselves. Those greedy bastards keep taking their lump sums for short term solutions, but I do not even want to think about what the city of Chicago budget will be like in like 3 to 4 years after they burn through all of their money and no longer have the cash flow from parking meters, the skyway, and Midway. (they claim they won't burn through the money that fast, but you know politicians don't know how to save a dime)

Are you kidding me? where the hell is that money going? where's it going to go?

certainly not the highways. poorest fucking quality road system I've driven in this country.

One of the sadder facts about Chicago corruption is that Jesse Jackson isn't as powerful as he could be.... 😉

Why do you think he was crying on election night, it wasn't out of joy. He was thinking "That should be me!"

He was barely a factor in Illinois politics.

These other guys have been entrenched so long, they were born into this stuff. Obama came out of nowhere only a few years ago.

IN FACT, these guys OPENLY RESENT Obama for his unwillingness to play, and his overwhelming success for ignoring them for years. None of them really supported his Senate campaign.

Don't be an idiot.

The ORT money went into putting those Rod R. Blagojevich signs all over the tollway. $15,000 per sign because they were mounted on steel tubes using "special materials."

..no wonder why the democrats go into a cold sweat over the mere mention of wire taps. The fact that he wallowed in Ill.politics is clear indication he's a willing accomplice regardless of their open resentment. Nothing more then slight of hand and smoke and mirrors for public consumption.

lol...if it took this long to bring down Rod I sort of doubt it.

Daley is too smart and has compartmentalized everything. At worst he loses a couple city officials/aides and claims he had no knowledge. Like his father he'll probably be the last man standing until they lower him into his grave.

yeap. EVERYONE knows daley is currupt. hell its not secret. but you can't trace anything to him at all.

just look at the recent selling of the parking meters.

He did sell them to Morgan Stanley, though only after they happened to hire one of his nephews.

IIRC, 400M+ of that money is slated for the city's cash reserve. Along with some of the cash from the Skyway lease I'm sure they've crunched the numbers and figured out that the interest generated from the cash hoard will outstrip the revenues from just operating them. The rest of the cash will help the city limp through the next few years of the downturn.

The parking lease and subsequent increase also allowed the City to qualify for a $150M grant from the feds to implement a Bus Rapid Transit system.

If this is true, then why did Morgan Stanley agree to the contract? Morgan Stanley obviously thinks that it can make more money from the revenues than the interest on the cash.

Morgan Stanley is raising rates from $0.50/hr to $6.50/hr in some places. They will also be enforcing 24/7 (right now, city takes nights and weekends off for the most part).

The city couldn't practically raise parking rates as aggressively without it being a major production every single time. Easier to lease out the infrastructure, take the ginormous wad of cash, and let MS deal with it.

My mom is the head of the parking department for the City of Grand Rapids, Michigan. She said that there are very few cities greater than 200,000 people that have their own parking systems, and if they do, they usually sell them to private companies. Grand Rapids is one of the few cities in the country that not only is the parking system government owned, but profitable, yet the city wants to sell it. (Parking meters, ramps & all)

ok... never knew you can lose money on parking. Unless they don't count parking enforcement 🙂
