i was at gov ryan's speech here at northwestern univ school of law. bottom line is, a lot of work done by the center for wrongful convictions and law/medill students have shown how the death penalty has been a failure in the state of illinois in terms of wrongful implementation, regardless of one's moral stance on the death penalty in general.
I know a little bit about the failings of our system, but unlike yourself I'm not about to can the whole system.
In the past we actually had justice. Not perfect, but justice all the same. Today with all the damn Liberals and organisations like the ACLU and NAACP justcve has become subjective. Unless you are politically correct enough to warrant a free defense or stupid enough to trust a public defender, you are going to get convicted. Our system has been subjected to every Liberal whim to come along and has done not a thing but complicated the judicial process. Right and wrong has become subjective. The system is indeed corrupt, but until the law means what was intended, and not the Liberal interpretation of same, our system will remain broken.
Criminals all over the Nation are laughing.....and taking notes!

I'm glad that guy that raped and murdered several young girls just for pure pleasure gets to sit in an air-conditioned cell, watching cable tv, eating 3 meals daily, and sleep all the time for the rest of his life instead of being put to death.

The justice system isn't about appeasing victims but serving justice, which has shown that its perilously flawed by sentencing many innocent people to death.
Victims and their families are also hurt when innocent people are released as well, but that comes with experiencing a tragedy, however its justice that is more important. And these people are still serving life in prison! although life in prison isn't deserving for any innocent people either.
i agree with the whole executing innocent people argument, but i don't think a blanket commutation like this is the answer.
the fact that it comes 2 days until he leaves office makes it appear to be a political statement more than anything else.
i sympathize for the friends and relatives of the victims who have gone through so much and now have to deal with this.

EDIT: And before I hear all those BS arguments about how the system doesn't work because and incredibly small minority of people end up found innocent on appeal, that's what appeals are for. The people who are later found innocent are PROOF THE SYSTEM WORKS! We aren't killing innocents, we're killing people who have had trial after trial after trail after trial and who have been shown guilty each time.

He never said the Gov. wasn't a Republican (though good luck to Ryan in getting anything from the GOP ever again in his life). Yes, the days before the ACLU and the NAACP where you could kill a negro for looking at you funny were times of justice.
You should can the whole system. one of the reasons why there is the death penalty is a deturent. but the problem with that is that when someone kills someone they dont value life like the rest of society.
what needs to happen is to develop something new ( and no i dont think water torture is the right thing to do ) to reintergrate the murderer back into society and get them to be productive member of the community.

I want to limit the appeals process to 2 appeals, and a time limit of 30 years to enact them. the long time limit is to wait for irrefutable proof of your innocence to show up. the limit on appeals is to make sure that they cant just tie up the court system just to keep themselves in judicial limbo. After the unsuccessful completion of their second appeal, then they will have to finish their sentence at the earliest possible oppertunity. Also, they have the oppertunity to forgoe their appeals process and just get it over with.
I also propose that we use hard labor prisons. do away with these lazy inmates. take away internet access, and stop giving them variety in meals. they should be forced to eat some stew, at every meal, every day.
Life in our prisons is far too easy. Some of those convicts live better in cushier surroundings than i do.
So, in short, cut down the cost of executions, cut down the length of the appeals process, cut down the number of appeals, cut down the nice surroundings ngiven to them, and we have a far more efficient system. meaning, cut down on the # of people on death row. if people know trhat if trhey go on death row to actually die, than maybe less people will do crimes to go onto death row. if not, then at least those on death row wont go back onto the streets, and fall back in to their former activities.
