You know what, I hope they allow it. it would open pandora's box to freedom of information act anything government entity for private information, who wouldn't love to do a request for the IRS or Medicaid/Medicare or Welfare or any of the other countless government entities which store some sort of private information.

OP grossly mischaracterizes the IL State Attorney's position. This is a Freedom of Information Act request-if the request meets the statutory requirements and there is no applicable exemption, the request MUST be complied with. If you think there is a statuory exemption state what it is, but don't wrongly villify the Attorney General for purportedly initiating the disclosure-which he/she certainly did not. All the Attorney General did was review the case and determine in their opinion there was no applicable valid exclusionary provision.

And bfdd, IRS and Medicaid/Medicare records already have specific exclusions from FOIA, for good reason.

If a prospective home invader went online and saw YOU have a weapon, ... wouldn't they be less inclined to break into your home?

Probably. But wouldn't the inverse be true as well? Those that are NOT listed as firearm owners would then be more of a target.

I'm having a hard time seeing the insincerity in that argument. But then I'm just a gun-owner hating anti-gun nut that wants to see more people own guns.

Hell, make the list voluntary, I'll pay extra to have my name in large bold type.

I believe a little thing called the Bill of Rights should back up such privacy.

Yeah.

I'm thinking this may be a 4th amendment issue - "reasonable expectation of privacy".

If outlawing abortion is somehow an invasion of privacy, how is this not?

The state police aren't going to give up the FOID list to public perusal absent anything short of a IL supreme court decision.

If the court decides that it should be released the IL legislature should immediately pass a bill dismantling the FOID program and the records destroyed.

this is a list so people know where to go if they want to steal something without worrying about being shot, or find a house with lots of registered guns so they can ransack it

You folks are so damn paranoid.

Said Hitler to the Jews.

No, seriously, what kind of argument is this? To suggest we have gone too far. You protest such freedom and liberty as privacy provides, or merely with regards to the subject? Regardless of why you detest our taking offense, all you'd need to do is stop violating of our rights and this will all go away.

The Bill of Rights stands between us and we will not yield it all so easily. Paranioa you say, basic common decency we say. Public viewing of a registry is too far. Have you no decency?

Wow, a rant about how a gun owner is like a persecuted Jew. Thank you internet, what would I ever do without you? Paranoid and deluded.

The only result I see in doing this is to make the gun guys even more paranoid than they are now.

...and you dont feel the right to bear arms is a collective right of the people. You have an agenda, so you agree with this stupid shit. It's not your bull being gored, so you cheer this on. You are such a hypocrit.

Some states already give out this info if a FIA request is made. In NC, a gun control advocate gets the list of concealed carry holders every year. Why? Mainly so he can identify what politicians have ccw permits.

I don't agree that the information should be public, but the average criminal is not going to go through the request process to find out who has a ccw in their county. Further, that does not show them all gun owners, only CCW in NC, so the list is of limited value.

I think it's a great idea, then we'll know whether our neighbor has guns or not.
