Sitting in the left lane going no faster (or worse, slower) than other vehicles is one of my biggest pet-peeves, but I don't think another law is going to make any difference; the police have too many other things to prioritize over stuff like this.

No. This needs to be enforced mercilessly until humans understand. I seriously want to add a snow plow to the front of my Volkswagen and just push people out of the way. Why the fuck do these idiots do this? I see it every day. This morning a woman turned onto the road in front of me and immediately pulled into the left lane. Why? I had to pass her on the right. There wasn't anywhere to turn left for miles ahead. Just pure idiocy. The only way to confront idiocy while driving is sheer unadulterated brutality until the sheep learn.

Yes, also a pet peeve of mine.

However, the law does work, and quite well in some states. When I took a trip out West I noticed in many of those states people do not drive in the left lane at all, except to pass. (Of course, out-state types might, but they'll get a ticket too.)

Then they must have a rare combination of police and driver cooperation that works.

I tend to agree, except that American drivers are too stupid, and too many cars on American roads are pieces of shit. In Germany the Autobahn is a beautiful thing, but coming here driving on the highway was a scary experience until I got used to it again.

Yes - it was a wonderful thing driving in Ireland and Germany: People getting over for faster cars; only using the left (right in Ireland) for passing; general courtesy. I loved driving there - Germany for its autobahn and Ireland for its crazy roads but both for their amazing drivers. Of course I landed at ORD late and had to deal with 5pm traffic on the Dan Ryan Expressway in the rain. The soul crushing reality of our general shitty driverness hit me square in the face.

I do have a solution however...LEAVE SOONER. Be an adult and exercise some patience too.

That is an absurd argument. First - you cannot realistically leave early enough to plan for every single eventuality. Second - you can still hate the person in front of you for going 65.000001 in a 70 because they are self centered assholes who are holding up 20+ cars while they spent miles passing someone who is going 65 regardless of whether it will make you late or not. I would say 'Be and adult and realize that you are inconveniencing countless other people'. Often the time they would lose by getting behind the other car is dwarfed by the time all of those other people lost while waiting for the asshole to pass the other vehicle.

This system works flawlessly in other countries without the stupid argument of 'leave sooner'.

It's not enforced at all here so the law has no effect. Granted we don't really enforce the speed limit either...

Yip, it's awesome driving in Germany, haven't been to Ireland though. Even France, where no one seems to care about lines in the road, or traffic signs, even though they are crazy drivers, they are at least good drivers, here most just suck, on top of being self absorbed as if they are the only person on the road, and barely paying attention to the fact that they are operating a 2000+lb piece of machinery.

He's probably one of those with their ear glued to their phone instead of eyes glued to the road. You're exactly right, and, why should I have to inconvenience myself just because morons can be bothered to drive right?

A few years ago me and a group of cars were going around 80 in a 70 mph zone on the interstate. We all passed a truck pulling a horse trailer in the passing lane, as we were doing this there was a trooper on the side of the road. He pulled out and we all slowed down, and he pulled the guy pulling the trailer over.

No. This should be one of the highest priority for traffic cops in all states. Much higher than speeding. Lower than drinking or texting while driving, though. Fuck these slowpokes and fuck their parents for not teaching them how to drive correctly. In fact, if someone gets ticketed for this, their parents should automatically be issued a ticket as well.

Sometimes when I drive I notice my psychic skills kick in. I become aware that I am going to die in a traffic accident in a bit and my mind sends a command for the guy in front of me to slow down. This not only alters my future but gives my unconscious mind a chance to laugh its ass off at me. Then I hear the wisdom of my Father echoing in my ears: "Better ten minutes late in this life than 10 years early in the next.

Today you will think to yourself:

Everything happens by God's will so everything that happens is perfect and the only way to feel about perfection is good.

Inconvenience? You obviously don't understand why they say "driving is a privilege, not a right. You're opinion is a self serving one, as in it's always about you or how anyone who has to get somewhere fast has the right of way.
With all the serious accidents on busy highways these days, the last thing we need is to inconvenience the selfish assholes who cannot plan ahead for anything in life.
A smart person always prepares for the unknowing, a flat tire or even traffic jams. That is why such a person would be equipped, keep their car mechanically in check and ..dare i say it, leave sooner than you plan to arrive so you don't have to zig zag or worry about one car doing 65.0000001 mph, much less have a flat tire, wait for train..etc. It's not hard to think once in a while.

Yes, I guess they do.

IIRC, they have a lot of highway signs about being in the left for passing only. And I found it bit weird that everyone there obeyed. I'm guessing the LEO are quick to hand out tickets for violating the rule.

With the exception of the occasional trip out West, my driving is on the East coast where most people drive like shiz.

I immediately discredit any argument from anyone who refers to "these days _______" as a broadly accepted axiom. What it means is that you accept your preconceptions of present reality as being truth rather than basing your information upon established fact. "You can never be too careful these days," or "There's so many crazy people out there these days," or similar catch phrases are complete bullshit.

This law is pretty stupid.

Where I live now, and every other city I've ever lived in, the infrastructure / highway system was created before the population boom, so both lanes are constantly full of cars during the main commute hours.

Yeah, this. Never heard about the left lane being only for passing over here. Its used just like any other lane, only faster. Seems silly to keep a whole lane empty except for "passing", especially considering how congested things get over here.

Of course you don't keep it open during gridlock, but if you aren't passing anyone and there is nobody directly in front of you, get out.

Oh no, Moonie. You should never do that. Haven't you seen Final Destination? If your time is up it's best not to try to avoid it. It only makes things worse.

You still in NOVA? We actually have that law here but the cops do squat to enforce it so it is worthless.

So, if I'm already going 70 on a 65 MPH, 2 lane highway, and some late worker wants to ride my ass to try to pass me up, would I be obliged to move over, or can I continue to troll the speeders.

I can understand such a law if one driver is slightly under or at the speed limit, or if (god forbid) there was no hard speed limit altogether, but if I'm already going past the limit to pass other cars on my right, and some jack-wagon wants to go even faster, don't expect me to move over until the right lane is clear of the slower motorists.

Yes you are obliged to get over. Make your pass and get your ass back in the right lanes.

Left Kane is for passing and when you pass you should do so with the purpose of getting out if the passing lane as quickly as is safe.

One would think the term "passing lane" would be all you would need to hear. :(

Problem is many people believe its acceptable to take 2-5 minutes to "pass".

The law in my state seems to work pretty well. Mostly.

There are also laws in some states against "impeding the flow of traffic": in your hypothetical if you were in one of those states and the average speed of cars in the left lane was say 75, you would be breaking the law even though the speed limit is 65.

Seems to be a thread for many to pull out the tiny dicks and display their large and well used assholes, or pieholes (oh wait I repeat myself :whiste:).
