Illegal immigrates and people who play by the rules

All of this stuff about offering amnesty to people who entered the nation illegally has me rather upset.

The reason why I am upset is because people who play by the rules, and law abiding families who have been here generations are having their citizenship devalued.

A sense of pride has been instilled in me from before I can remember that being a United States citizen is something that I should be proud of. There are people who wait years to become citizens. Just as I am expected to go through our legal system when there is a problem, those who respect our laws go through the system to enter the nation.

By setting an example of abiding the law I can ask that people who request citizenship follow our laws.

What example is the government setting by allowing people not only to break our laws, but rewarding those people with citizenship?

If the government hands out citizenship to everyone who can sneak across the border, of what value is it?

I feel that everything I have been told about being a US citizen is a lie.

If the government is rewarding people who break our laws with citizenship, why should I follow our laws? If the government will not enforce our laws, what hope do we have?

I for one only follow laws so long as illegal immigrants aren't provided an arduous path to citizenship. While I realize there had been previous legalizations of immigrants in the past, I chose to ignore those.

Now though? Fuck that. It's Mad Max time.

We're being fundamentally transformed and with the help of the Republican party. Progressives want us all to be citizens of the world and that means they will not stop at giving citizenship to the illegals within our borders now. They will extend it to the far corners of the earth. I would imagine that residence within our borders will not be a requirement if they achieve their ultimate ends.

Your standard of living will be reduced to raise the standard of others. Your freedoms will be reduced to give greater freedom to those that wish to harm you. I could go on.

It's coming and it can't be turned back. When it ultimately fails, progressives will blame others. It's how they roll.

The fabric of our society is held together by respect for the law.

If the government is not willing, or unable to enforce the law, what do we have left? We have a suit that is unraveling at the seams.

So why is this 'amnesty', which is far more onerous on immigrants than the amnesty that Reagan signed, going to cause society to unravel at the seams when the other one didn't?

This is wrong. These people shouldn't be given amnesty. Democrats want them for votes only.

Its laughable when their base is low skilled workers on the government dole.
Guess who these new "legal" immigrants are going to displace in the workforce?

Then you have the unions who only want this to expand the union roles.
Guess what that displaces?
Current union members.

The Democrats, progressives, and unions don't care.

I think it is the sheer mass of the situation.

From the news articles I found Reagan granted around 3 million people amnesty. Now we are looking at almost ten times that number?

Are we going to go through this amnesty issue every 30 years with the number doubling and tripling?

Its not like the illegal immigrants are engineers or doctors. These are low wage workers who will probably be eligible for social programs.

Many basic problems here. First, the number of illegal immigrants in the US is estimated to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 11 million. Total. The number you are citing comes from right wing sources attempting to inflate the numbers by extrapolating that once people have citizenship this will allow other family members to apply legally for citizenship, as well as counting people over a decade. Gotta be careful of when people are lying to you. The provisions of the law most certainly will not apply to all 11 million illegal immigrants here, etc. etc.

It seems very suspicious to suddenly declare yourself lawless and your citizenship debased for a population equal to roughly 3.5% of the population being given an opportunity for legal status but have lived for almost 30 years seemingly just fine after a law that gave a population equal to roughly 1.5% of the US an opportunity for legal status.

This will hurt black people and poor people the most. They will face much more competition and they will have their wages dropped and lose their jobs.

Unions will also be hurt because they lose jobs to them as well.

How can people be so ignorant to accept this?

In 30 years will be looking at granting 5.5% of the population amnesty?

but have lived for almost 30 years seemingly just fine

Drugs, gangs, drug related violence, kidnappings, beheadings,,, all just a few miles south of our border.

Detroit, new orleans, L.A.,,,, do we wish for gang related violence to spread?

When a population migrates, they bring their customs with them.

I'm trying to figure out your parameters from a descent into lawlessness.

Crime has dropped precipitously in the US over the last 30 years. Maybe that means we need to legalize even more immigrants?

We are a nation and a people of laws.

When does the government get to pick and choose which laws to enforce and which laws to ignore?

Every government ever does that with law enforcement. Do the police arrest every jaywalker? Why not? We are a nation and a people of laws.

Furthermore, this is explicitly a legal pathway for doing this. ie: the government is changing the law. Are you against governments changing the law ever?

Are you against governments changing the law ever?

I am against the government bowing to the will of a minority.

Is there something wrong with our current immigration laws?

Or, are the laws being changed because so many people are ignoring the law?

Lets use your number of around 11 million illegal immigrants. When you have 11 million people who stand up and say they will not follow our laws, what is the government supposed to do? We can not arrest 11 million people, we can not deport 11 million people.

The easiest solution is to change the law and appease those 11 million criminals.

It's a contraction of immigrant ingrates.

I thought that at first, but it is preceded by "illegal"... with the connotation that legal immigrates don't bother the OP and only illegal ones do... so then I concluded it was a very embarrassing typo.

i guess i'm a dreamer... i believe in a world with open borders, and governed by natural law, and i refuse to "move backwards" in my thinking..

This whole mess is only because our immigration policy has been a complete failure for decades. It should had been fixed in the 80s when Reagan granted amnesty to millions. But instead we kept up the broken system and now we have another 12-16 million that need to be granted amnesty.

I say need because it is simply unrealistic to deport a population the size of 3 minnesotas. They need to fix the path to citizenship so it is easier to attain. Why are educated people waiting years to become a citizen? If it takes them that long why would an uneducated person wait at all? It makes more economic sense to live underground and not even try to become a citizen.

Amnesty is the side effect of a disasterous policy.
