sternfan, i think making english as a primary language is the least of your worries.
also when did your relatives come over? if they came when germans were recent immigrants, then i assure you they lived in german towns. it's just common for recent immigrants to associate with their own countrymen. then slowly after a couple of generations they move out, because they can no longer speak german. the same will occur with the mexicans and any other group. if you have seen their kids, or grandchildren you'd realize they're americans first.
your kind of thinking is just like the republicans/democrats. none of yall understand illegals, immigrants, or hispanics are not one group.
anyway as far as illegal immigrants, i think we should allow green cards (which this is one small step towards). just like other businesses. first they have to offer the job to americans, no one comes, then green card workers. there's no way they will fill all those jobs, even if they are forced to pay minimum wage.
of course, since you allow them to import people, the government get to set the minimum wage. companies can't have it both ways. workers shouldn't be brought in solely to keep wages down. can't survive? too bad, it's not a legitimate business in the US.
also i would not allow companies in the NYSE to hire outside the US. multination, shmtinational. trade is for products, not labor. until we have no borders, multinational corporations should not be allowed to exist. they are welcome to buy from other companies, which they have no control or ownership whatsoever.
my main concern is the companies that wish to hire american workers, but can't because they are forced to pay minimum wage and payroll taxes and so on. bring in the IRS.
i'd be happy to let the agriculture go elsewhere. i think it's a waste of our water, energy, and land when other countries can do it cheaper. let our land be a strategic reserve. we need to stop subsidizing farmers. let the market decide.
