One of the biggest mistakes the Dems and the Repub keep making administration after administration is not making english the national language.
What if a States population is predominately Spanish speaking? Should they be forced to do business in English because you and the Joe Bob's in Virgini only speak English?

OK Red first off I'm no joe bob, I lived 75% of my life 10 miles from the GW Bridge in Jersey, and secondly That remark about being a joe bob was just plain stupid. Third YES THEY SHOULD LEARN ENGLISH if they ever want to get a decent job and fit in with all Americans. Working the fields and doing landscaping is not a great job. You will go on my ignore list because you are just plain dumb as a ROCK! And for all of your defenders remember Red brought this on with his Joe Bob comment.

Ok Joe.

So you are saying, Bob, that Spanish speaking people can't get ahead in the US? You know this as a fact?

sternfan, i think making english as a primary language is the least of your worries.

also when did your relatives come over? if they came when germans were recent immigrants, then i assure you they lived in german towns. it's just common for recent immigrants to associate with their own countrymen. then slowly after a couple of generations they move out, because they can no longer speak german. the same will occur with the mexicans and any other group. if you have seen their kids, or grandchildren you'd realize they're americans first.

your kind of thinking is just like the republicans/democrats. none of yall understand illegals, immigrants, or hispanics are not one group.

anyway as far as illegal immigrants, i think we should allow green cards (which this is one small step towards). just like other businesses. first they have to offer the job to americans, no one comes, then green card workers. there's no way they will fill all those jobs, even if they are forced to pay minimum wage.

of course, since you allow them to import people, the government get to set the minimum wage. companies can't have it both ways. workers shouldn't be brought in solely to keep wages down. can't survive? too bad, it's not a legitimate business in the US.

also i would not allow companies in the NYSE to hire outside the US. multination, shmtinational. trade is for products, not labor. until we have no borders, multinational corporations should not be allowed to exist. they are welcome to buy from other companies, which they have no control or ownership whatsoever.

my main concern is the companies that wish to hire american workers, but can't because they are forced to pay minimum wage and payroll taxes and so on. bring in the IRS.

i'd be happy to let the agriculture go elsewhere. i think it's a waste of our water, energy, and land when other countries can do it cheaper. let our land be a strategic reserve. we need to stop subsidizing farmers. let the market decide.

linky - or just google

At a boisterous signing ceremony at a Los Angeles DMV office, Davis said the new law would make the state's roads safer by ensuring all drivers are licensed and insured.

"Every day, hard-working immigrants work in our fields, clean our hotels and care for our seniors," Davis said. "These immigrants pay taxes, and they deserve the right to drive."

It is disgusting to see him forget that these people are here ILLEGALLY:|
Illegals do NOT deserve any form of legal US/Cali ID. The ones who are here LEGALLY can and should though:)

Sounds reasonable. Why are they "illiegal"? Let's not forget why they are there or why the government allows them to be ther, cheap labour. So, as Davis mentioned, these "illegals" are there for a purpose and as such for Public Safety and Accountability they should be able to Legally obtain certain priviledges like a valid drivers license. They have to prove they can drive and know the Rules of the Road like anyone else, so instead of them careening down the road oblivious to important Traffic laws or Driving Skills, they now are as skilled/knowlegdeable as anyone else.

Of course, you could just round them all up and deport them, since they are "Illegal", but how long would California's and other Southern States Agricultural Sectors survive without all that cheap labour?

The whole point is that they are ILLEGAL, so giving them a driver's licensee doesn't mean they are any less ILLEGAL, but it gives them the appearance of being such. To say that giving them a driver's license will improve safety or any other such thing is non-sense - people drive with or without licenses. The only reason to give them a license is so they can vote - plain and simple - just a ploy to win a recall election. Why do you think he vetoed it twice before and now just switched? Yeah - that's right - he now "cares"

Yes, illegal, but allowed for the reasons I gave.

I'll disagree on the Drivers License part, though you are quite correct, they will drive License or no License. The advantage, as I stated, with giving them a License is hthat hey need to pass a test as anyone else, at least they'll know how to drive. As for a sinister way to get votes, is a Drivers License all you need in California in order to Vote?

Got proof? In places within Florida and California there are very large communities of Spanish speaking citizens, don't you think that would allow an environment where a Spanish speaking person could do quite well? I think so.

No - they aren't "allowed" for any reason. They are ILLEGAL - those that employ ILLEGALs are breaking the law. Now a migrant worker or similar wouldn't be considered "ILLEGAL". I don't give two rats asses why they are "here" - if they aren't here LEGALLY - then they don't belong here and don't need a driver's license. I don't care how well they drive - or if they can "prove it" by getting a license - they are ILLEGAL. See where I'm going with this yet?;)
ILLEGAL=ILLEGAL=ILLEGAL there is no "here because..." they aren't supposed to be here. They need to follow the damn rules if they want to come here and work and/or become a citizen - just like any other immigrant.
