I find that it's a game of time management. Back when I was upgrading most of the structures in my towns, I'd look at how long it'd be until I'd be able to check in with the game again, and find structures with upgrade times that'd fit into that time block.
But as you get much farther along in the game, a lot of upgrade times take up most of a day, so your time is spent on organizing pillages and blockades to acquire enough resources to make those long upgrades.
Unfortunately, the game is not finished yet, and people were progressing too quickly. Instead of making the game more interesting, they simply made everything more expensive, thus slowing everyone down.
In the earlier stages, this is not so noticeable. It's us old-timers, with multiple cities, who are hardest hit by the limitations. Gameforge has a soft cap of where its players "should" be. Once you hit that cap, you'll notice that upgrade costs suddenly quadruple over their regular progression, and upgrade times increase drastically.
In terms of being "vaporized" - your infrastructure can never be damaged. Even if your army is wiped out, you can be well on your way to having replacements made by the next day.

When you are able to build an embassy, it will allow you to join the alliance.
Research- Foreign Cultures
Build embassy
Send request to join alliance.

I noticed that they tweaked the game and made the corruption penalties a lot worse today. Now my masses aren't as happy anymore 🙁

My wife calls this the "damn game". Be ready to devote some serious time to getting your colonies going.

You should REALLY use Firefox with this game. There are lots of useful things to go along with it.
Firefox3 + Greasemonkey v0.8 + various add-ons = Goodness.
Once you get acclimated to what you can get with Firefox, the bare-bones interface you get with IE won't just look bad, it'll feel like someone chopped off your arms and replaced them with baseball bats, it's just that uselessly crippled.🙂

Ok so I just installed Firefox 3 RC3 and greasemonkey v0.8
Which other add-ons do I need? I will try to install this at work too if it's that much better..
wtf... in FF3 I only have the option of alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and epsilon for worlds.. not theta..

Now, I'm not sure how to best order these for installation, since I don't use all of them. But there you go.

And thanks for the heads-up, I didn't know RC3 was out already.
Also, concerning the order that scripts are processed:
Go to Tools -> Greasemonkey -> Manage User Scripts.
In there, you can drag the scripts around.
For example, I think Kronos must go ahead of the Kissy Wider Menu plugin.
Also note: Kronos is not official Gameforge-approved. If you need to post screenshots for any reason, you might want to switch to IE to take them. I don't know how picky they are about that stuff.

Well I found out today that this game is blocked at work.
I was researching Pulleys or something when I left home this morning. Once it finishes researching that, will it automatically start the next item? Or will I have to select something to research once I get home?
