IGN's official nominees for 2013 Game of the Year are...

BioShock Infinite
Device 6
Dota 2
Gone Home
Grand Theft Auto V
Super Mario 3D World
Tearaway
The Last of Us
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Tomb Raider

Thoughts? I think it's a travesty this is missing Assassin's Creed IV and yet includes Bioshock Infinite. The story, really it goes without saying, is massively weaker in AC IV, but as far as the game is concerned it is simply much better. I'm sad it's not there.

Fire Emblem Awakening should of been on there.

AC4 while a good game still has all the short comings of a AC game and is reason enough to exclude it from GOTY lists imo.

The Last of Us is the clear winner for me, it is probably the best game this gen with the main competitor being the Soul's games.

I don't consider Gone Home a game per say. It's more an interactive novel. I think it gets the praise due to the 90s nostalgia factor and its
LGBT themes.
It was alright but not on my GOTY list.

Tomb Raider is another game I that was pretty decent. Though it's not my personal favourite from this year.

I really enjoyed Bioshock Infinite. More for its setting, story, and themes then actual gameplay, but it's actually my favourite FPS.

I haven't gotten around to playing the others yet. I'm surprised Ni No Kuni didn't make the list. IGN gave it such high praise. Yes, I know it technically came out in Japan in 2011, but it didn't come out here until 2013.

ive literally never heard of 4 of those games.

i agree that the last of us should definitely be #1. i think gta5 would have been on there even if no one had even played that game just because of the hype that game had. to me, it wouldn't even make the list. i also wouldn't put bioshock on the list either.

i think tomb raider is fair too, that game definitely was one of the best experiences of the past gen, and the re-invention of lara croft was very well done. i just wish it had more puzzles.

but the clear cut winner (to me) is killer instinct!

Why isn't "Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons" on this list? Short game, but amazing.

IMO Tearaway doesn't belong. It's an 8 hour tech demo really. It's not much of a challenge at all and it has almost no story that makes any kind of sense. It uses every feature of the vita in some way, the rear touch pad, the touch screen, both cameras etc. It even goes out of it's way to force the player to edit a character's face and make paper designs even if you just want to get to the next platforming puzzle. It's definitely not on the same level as Last of Us and Grand Theft Auto 5 that's for sure.

I recently played Bioshock Infinite. It was as generic an FPS as it gets, didn't see the hype at all.

I still haven't played Last Of Us; from what I've heard, it should win. My choice would be GTA V, although Assassin's Creed 4 has been taking up a lot of my time lately.

I've been playing last of us..and I don't get the hype. I liked BI and TWD more. A story based action game shouldn't take 3+ hours to "get you into it"..that and the controller based shooter aiming is horrid.

Game play for Bioshock games was always the worst part of it. Infinite had a good story and setting.
Its story and setting was inferior to Bioshock 1/2, though. I really feel like it got a bit of an easy time with ratings because of who made it.

It was a great game, but there was so much hype it's almost impossible to meet expectations. It didn't quite meet mine primarily because everybody had built it up to be the second coming of Christ in a video game. It definitely deserves a spot on the list of 2013 games, though.

Last of us was the best game of last gen period. No other game got me into the story like it plus the music was as good as it gets

BioShock Infinite
I was disappointed by this game. It had subpar gameplay, a plot that pretend to be deep but was in reality extremely shallow, and setting that was pretty for the first 30 minutes but became bland fast as nothing changed. I'd give it a C, which is far from GOTY.

Never heard of it.

Since this is pulling less players than LoL, I don't think it should get GOTY.

Gone Home
I don't mind games that focus on narratives. I enjoyed To The Moon, Ace Attorney, The Walking Dead, and some straight up visual novels as well. However, Gone Home's execution was poor and I really think it only gets so much praise because it resonates with the LGBT community, which is a huge trend in the game industry right now.

Grand Theft Auto V
Haven't played it, but the hype seemed to die pretty fast after release. I'm waiting for the PC version.

Super Mario 3D World
One of my candidates for GOTY. My favorite Mario since Super Mario World. Tons of fun levels that range from easy to extremely hard and 4 player couch co-op.

Haven't played it, but it heard it is very good. Same with Puppeteer.

The Last of Us
I'm a couple of hours into this right now,
Just got to the part with Bill where we are looking for a car battery
. It is good, but I wouldn't say its excellent. The characters, environment, music, and dialogue are all very good. I hate Ellie, but I guess that means maybe she is a well made character. The actual gameplay is pretty mediocre though. Shallow stealth mechanics, subpar shooting, shallow crafting and item collection. I haven't finished it yet, but I doubt I'd call it my GotY.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Haven't finished this game either yet. It is good, but not amazing. I kind of like the rental system in this sequel to ALttP, but I don't know if I'd want it in another Zelda. It is nice having an actual overworld for a change.

Tomb Raider
Almost done with this game. It was a pleasant surprise. Very good for the most part. Lara can be a bit annoying, mostly because of both her voice actress and dialogue. There are WAY to many QTEs. But, the shooting and exploration are good.

I agree with this. It was a fun game, but has no lasting appeal and really only got tossed in there I imagine because it's finally a Vita specific game that would only work on the Vita.

I'm also disappointed to see AC4 not make the list. If you're going to put other standard sequels up there like GTA5, Bioshock, and Zelda than there's no reason AC4 shouldn't be there. IMO there's more advancement of mechanics in AC4 than in GTA5.

I actually liked AC4 but the free run mechanics need work even still. I hate getting stuck on a post that I didn't want to jump to.

Exactly, sword play is easy and running and jumping suck. inFamous did parkour right, I rarely remember getting frustrated from getting stuck on something, AC4 I'm constantly getting annoyed with me getting stuck somewhere I didn't intend to.

Device 6 - I spent two minutes trying to figure out what this game was. Didn't find. No longer care.

Tomb Raider is my favorite game on the list, but I suspect that's because I haven't had the fortune of playing The Last of Us yet.

I agree. I was completely surprised by how good Tomb Raider was.

But, no PS3, so I haven't played Last of Us as well.

Device 6 is a fantastic "game". I'm going to say "game" because there's not really a lot of what people here would consider gameplay. But it's a pretty wonderful experience, regardless. Not GotY material though.
