http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2014/03/04/explosion-at-nj-housing-complex-causes-heavy-damage/

Contractors in NJ who were digging in the area accidentally spliced a gas line and leveled 15 town-homes, 55 in all damaged. Are you prepared if this something like happened to you.

By prepared, i mean having all your documents and data scanned and backed up off site, cloud based so you can start the recovery process.

I can only imagine coming home to find everything you own burned to a crisp.

My digital stuff is backed up offsite, but not everything is digital. I really should get a fire resistant safe. I sure would miss my kittiots...

I'm going to get a safety deposit box at my bank and put DVD-Rs/BD-Rs of my most important data in it.

Why a safety deposit box? Cuz I get one free with my account anyway.

Unfortunately, I can't get a digital passport, or digital social security card... BRB, getting chips implanted.

Anything physical that is irreplaceable is in my safety deposit box/has a copy in my safety deposit box, and anything digital that is irreplaceable is in a backup drive in my safety deposit box.

Guess I would be screwed if my safety deposit box burned down/was destroyed.

Nope... I have an external hard drive coming so I can get serious about backing shit up. But I'm honestly going to park the HDD beside the computer, so thief or fire will claim it.

Oh well, I'm not that important. Even my written down passwords can be easily reset.

But it won't happen to me, for the same reason I won't win the lottery.

[Now watch it happen to me]

all of my irrecoverable computer data is backed up to CrashPlan and I've got renter's insurance. (I don't backup shit like movies, games, etc that I could just re-download, but personal pictures, my creative writing projects, old papers from college, and such are all backed up)

I'd have to request new copies of my birth certificate, passport, and social security card, but that wouldn't be the end of the world. I don't have a fire-proof safe and who knows if they'd even be able to find it in the wreckage if I did.

Well this'll take a while...

Did you know there's a CrashPlan FreeNAS plugin? It's kind of awesome.

Don't worry, the bulldozer or roof will probably crush it...

Yes. My important docs are in the safe deposit box. Important data is offsite. As long as something doesn't wipe out my house and my CoLo in the same instance, I'm good.

My wife has a lot of sentimental items though that would be an issue to her. Me... Everything could burn and it wouldn't make much difference to me.

that's mostly been my thought with regard to investing in a fire-proof safe.

I can't think of what paper documents I'd have that would be worth the expense of a safe deposit box either... birth certificate, passport, and social security card should all be re-obtainable without too much fuss I'd imagine, I don't own any expensive jewelry, and I don't keep much cash lying around the house.

If that happened I'd lose everything.

If I lost everything it would suck, but it wouldn't be the end of the world either.

Considering how much time I spend in my home I would say I don't have a concern. If my home blows up I go with it. Nuf said.

This reminds me I should put my passport in my fire safe box. Then again, most of that stuff is eventually replaced. Come to think of it, I dont even know what's in my fire safe box. I think the deed to my property and maybe a few other things... hmmm...
