hmm... is that supposed to be a rhetorical question? dunno... but meaning that you could see your future assumes that there is no way of changing it, shouldnt it?

Nope.

I like being aware of seasons and patterns in life, but I prefer the rest to be left up to chance, hard work, and free will.

OK, try this. You see your future and it shows you are a Catholic Cardinal. Does that mean from now on you can just rape and shoot everyone that you hate? Go ahead and do drugs, visit prostitutes, rob liquor stores, vandalize property and generally wreak havoc? Doesn't matter what you do, because you'll end up a pillar of society!

Look at it that way and decide if you would even ask this question if you had it to do over again.

Hey, some of my best friends are Catholic Cardinals! :p

Speaking of Holy ones, how did your husband's family treat you yesterday, Isla? The only thing that was mentioned at our table concerning news of any kind, was that the Chinese had sent the USA a care package of several million cases of Viagra. They had heard we were having trouble with our elections...

LOL Ornery, and I'm pretty certain if there was such a thing as a past life, I got nailed by them during the Inquisition. Heretic is me. ;)

Thanksgiving turned out lovely, thank you. I suppose my fear of holidays past had me anticpating the worst. Of course, the most vocal of the crew were not present, so let's hope that everything is settled by Christmas.

Now, my question is this: According to the question you pose, do I still get to be a Catholic Cardinal? Or, have I blown it because I was cocksure of my future success? I think, if I knew the future, I would endanger it. Is that what you mean?

Sorry, but I ponder such things...

Ach, now you're really changing the question, Isla. There have been many, many sci-fi stories revolving around this question. Most based on your ability to "change" the future. But in the case of this topic, the question is asked "if you could foresee your future". The thorny issue it poses is, do you want to live your life knowing how it will turn out?

The problem with that is the scenario I posed. If your future can be "seen", then it's set in stone. There's nothing you can do to change it. Hence, you can go on a "Thelma And Louise" crime spree and still come out smelling like a rose. You might argue that you wouldn't even be able to force yourself to do those terrible things. Uh, sort of makes the whole question look all the more ridiculous, no?

Where's the fun in that?

It seems to me that knowing what's going to happen would negate all of the fun associated with dealing with stuff as it happens. No thanks.

I might.. to see if the girl I'm in love with now I end up marrying.. or to see how successful I'll be.

but maybe not.

another question - if you had the chance to know when and how you were going to die, would you want to know?

Wahhhh, this makes a mockery of "true" sci-fi (not the Star Wars type)! "...if you had the chance to know when and how you were going to die..." If you knew that, you could live forever by staying away from where you know you'll die. Either that, or you would no longer have free will...
