Hey, you brought it up. :p

The rate of spending increases under Bush are not outpacing the average rate of increases under Clinton.

The time we spent in Germany and Japan is highly relevant. Both were completely destroyed and in chaos when we took control and both took years to make an exit from.

Of course occupying a country in the ME is going to be messy. Anyone who claims it shouldn't be is bullsh!tting themselves.
Invading Iraq didn't make us safer, in fact it made the world a much more dangerous place. It wasn't part of the war on Terror until the Dub misled us into supporting his ill conceived invasion and occupation.

God Bless our Soldiers over there but they aren't fighting to protect our country as much as they are being used as pawns by the Proponents of Pax Americana. One of the few things that the Dub peomised us that I thought was righteous is when he promised that we wouldn't be the World's Policeman abd get into the business of Nation Building. Oops, lied too by another Politician, what's new?

Frankly I don't fault this kids not wanting to be forced into fighting a war that really has nothing to do with America's security. On the other hand if we needed to conscript soldiers to fight in Afghanistan I would fault them for not protecting their country as we were attacked by those based in that country with the blessings of the Animals that ran that country at the time.

Sorry, but I disagree. I think the world is a much safer place with Saddam out of power and a democracy in the Middle East. I think having Iraq be a focal point for terrorism rather than the US makes us safer as well. You're not looking at the big picture, but rather at immediate threats. The problem with the war on terror is there are no clear immediate threats. That's what terrorism is all about. Resolution 1441 gave us a way to turn around a Middle Eastern country and start a democracy.

Saddam broke a cease fire agreement for 12 years, and paid off UN and European leaders to keep himself in power as he did so. Just as the Treaty of Versailles should have been enforced, Bush FINALLY enforced UN resolution 1441.

And not only that, but the US enforcing 1441 put the fear of gawd into Libya and North Korea. So how you can say it doesn't make us safer is beyond me. Maybe you're denying reality to fit a preconceived political position?

I think you need to add another option to the poll. I for one would not go due to my religious beliefs, if I didn't feel as strongly as I do in my religion then I would go.......

geez you need some sorta scenario here like
if its go to war in vietnam to stop communism or something that is really pointless....like "hey lets go beat up the middle east for a while"
then i prolly wouldn't fight

if it was ....oh no ze germans are coming to take over the country....then yes

its all a matter of circumstance

I would fight for a war I believe in.

Seeing diplomats shake hands after a war that has killed thousands sickens me!! The hypocrisy!!

WWI=Yes
WWII= Yes
Vietnam= No
Iraq= Definitely NO!!

What is it with you people? Why don't you understand that your obligation to this country does not depend on if you agree with the government or not? We take our freedom for granted too much. If you live here and use the benefits and resources America has to offer, then god damnit, you're obligated to support and defend this nation no matter what your personal feelings are. We have certain rights and certain freedoms, but name me one thing on the bill of rights that says you have a right to shirk your responsibility to the nation in times of need? If you want to change things, then go into politics and change them. But until that time, you're responsible for your actions and your obligations.

We have too many god damned pansies in this country. We need to have manhood rites of passage like tribal communities did.

I would go. Thinking about it anyways after university but the state of the Canadian military is scaring me off.

I don't mean to flame anyone, but a lot of you say some really ludicrous things. You'd fight in the World Wars but not in Vietnam or Iraq? How about Afghanistan? Korea? The idea that you should get to pick and choose your battles...*rolls eyes* Try to have some faith in not only your President, but also your Congress, Senate and military. Trust that they know just a tiny bit more about foreign affairs and when stepping in is needed than you do.

Also, I hope all draft dodgers are shot upon attempting to enter Canada. If you want to live in a country until the time comes where it calls upon you, we don't want ya.

What's your opinion of those who would use family connections to get into, say, the WA state national guard? Even if we got there at someone elses' expense?

What about if I decided later on that I wanted to go work for a senator or something and get into politics?

(yes, I'm seriously thinking of getting into politics someday)

You'd probably end up in the Army forever, because the DI would kill you ;) . Actually, off the top of my head, here are the possible results to that action:
-you slip in the shower and end up somehow castrating yourself on the way down. Discharged on a medical.
-you slip in the shower and break your neck. Buried in an Army uniform.
-you get the crap beaten out of you and go through boot camp like everyone else, with the exception that you get ridden harder than any other recruit that DI has ever had. In reality, this is the most likely result.

There would be more consequences to that action than just paperwork and a dishonorable discharge. That you can be rather sure of.

Though of course this would mean I'd be stuck there with them. I think it'd be worth it.

Thats ....great

I dont think a persons willingness to fight for the country depends on how wealthy they are.

The US army is the best army in the world. I assure you its not that way because we have an "richie" "snotty" army of "lazy slobs". Why do you want to force these people into the army?

im not a US citizen but ive lived here LEGALLY for most of my life. ive been to a lot of places and seen a lot of things and i can tell you one thing... AMERICA IS THE BEST DAMN COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. even if you dont agree with its politics, the war, the president, im pretty sure if you are here that you realize that overall its still the best place to live, mostly because of the freedoms we have.

people take the whole freedom thing for granted... its wasnt free. it was paid by people who died for this country. all these people saying that "i dont believe in this war so im not fighting" dont realize that serving in the military isnt just about fighting against iraq... its about fighting FOR your country. if you dodge the draft, they will find a replacement so you are screwing him too.

i signed up for the american selective service because i live here and have been enjoying many of the freedoms and benefits of living here. for all the rights and priviledges america gives us, it only fair to contribute in any way you can when it needs you.
