The distinction I make between tipping is twofold: what's part of the job expectation, and also whether or not tipping is part of their income/compensation. A McDonald's employee's job is to take orders, and restock supplies as needed, and since none of them go out of their way to bring me my food, I don't tip them; their compensation is based on their hourly wage.
And servers go out of their way to bring you food?
