The distinction I make between tipping is twofold: what's part of the job expectation, and also whether or not tipping is part of their income/compensation. A McDonald's employee's job is to take orders, and restock supplies as needed, and since none of them go out of their way to bring me my food, I don't tip them; their compensation is based on their hourly wage.

And servers go out of their way to bring you food?

No and it's not expected. I worked in a pizza shop for a couple years; I always appreciated tips, but it was definitely out of the ordinary to get one. Drivers yes, in-store no.

A waiter/waitress has to satisfy their customer(s) which includes serving them food, true, but they DO rely on tips for their income, as I have previously stated.

And I do tip at buffets but not as much since the server is only bringing drinks/utentils etc. and the customers have to get food themselves.

It has nothing to do with the color of your skin. None of my white South African friends tip either.
People on the African/European continent are not forced tip and usually don't do so unless they recieve a service that warrants such(ex: doing more than your job description requires). I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same in Asia or Australia as well.
I'm not an "African-American" black...If you know what I mean. I'm not even from the US!

If I see you just standing around or attending to too many other tables and you never come around to refill my drink or only come to give us the bill, I'm not going to give a tip because it's customary to do so. That's idiotic.

If I have to call you from wherever you are and you refill, I consider doing that as part of your job description. You won't get a tip because I consider that "average".

If you walk by and see my glass/plate empty without me having to call you or raise my hand to get your attention to refill my drink and ask me if I need anything, you get a tip. That's outstanding service because it required no work on my part.

I never go to buffet restaurants. Buffet is code word for tastes like shit.

thanks for the contribution. There are good buffets out there, just don't expect to pay $7.95 for them.

Waitstaff would you tell you otherwise. 20% is the tip for any amount of service.

Since when? Who cares what waitstaff think, they're biased in their own favor. 15% has always been the "right" amount of tip. I always give 15% if you simply do your damn job, aka the bare minimum. If you suck, never refill my drink, or I see you standing around BS'ing with coworkers instead of asking me if I want something, you get less. If you do more, you get more.

20% is NOT the tip for "any amount of service."

Agreed. Service has to be VERY good to be deserving of a 20% tip.

When we go to a "sit-down" restaurant, the server is looking at a 15% tip for "normal service." If they do more than just deliver the food, if the food is hot and prepared correctly, if the drinks are kept filled, extra napkins brought throughout the meal, (paper napkins) and if the server is attentive, then they may get more than 15%...and as much as 25% for OUTSTANDING service.

POOR service cuts that tip drastically...and quickly. I have no problem with tipping 2 cents...to show my displeasure at the service. (leaving zero tip leaves the possibility that you just "forgot to tip.")

Here's an even better idea.
Write ZERO on the tip line if you recieve poor service and save your 2 cents.
Writing ZERO on the tip line doesn't leave the possibility that you just "forgot to tip."

I just find it sad that all you people feel the need to "buy" your good service. I choose to go to places that give good service regardless if you tip or not. People that actually care about their job and enjoy it and not only give good service cus they want a tip.

Really man? You really think these waiters care about their job and thats why they give good service.

Think about this for a second. Waiters get bitched at constantly about a lot of things that arent their fault. They are just trying to earn a paycheck like everyone else. You being a dick and not tipping because they are understaffed, overworked and under appreciated just makes everything that much worse. You don't have to tip a ton. Tip $2. It's not a big deal, but at least its SOMETHING. Not tipping simply because they are 'doing their job' is bullshit. If you eat in America, follow American customs for fucks sake. If you don't want to tip, go to Europe. Over here, its how we do things.

I normally tip 10-15% at buffet and 20%+ at normal restaurants. I tip 20%+ for delivery and usually zero for pickup. I throw in couple bucks even for pickup if it was a large order placed during busy time of the day.

Sorry but I choose to not give someone something for not doing anything extra. Sure that's custom here in America but a stupid custom.

How is that any different from employees who work in retail? You know how many times my technicians and I have been yelled at because a patient's insurance company won't pay for Vitamin C?
Pharmacy Technicians are understaffed, overworked and underappreciated. They don't get a tip.

Also, not everyone has wads of cash in their pocket.
I use plastic for everything and I mean everything. I don't carry coins, change, or a checkbook period.

When I order online or over the telephone how will I give a tip if I never carry cash or change?
There's no separate line for "tip" when you order online. I certainly won't give the driver my credit card information. I also wouldn't drive all the way to the ATM to withdraw $10.

Oh, and on your second point
I don't do things only because other people are doing it. If everybody jumps off a bridge, will you?

You don't seem to realize that they provide good service b/c others are tipping and they're making a decent wage and not minimum wage which you believe they should be making. Would you rather have higher prices so that restaurants paid their employee's higher wages?

I'm guessing you cheap asses don't go out often b/c I can't believe your SOs and friends want to cover your part of the tip.

Not usually. Like someone mentioned earlier in the thread, if there's a tip jar there, and I'm feeling generous, I may drop a dollar in there.

Your going to the wrong ones, there is a Chinese buffet near me that for $11.95 (includes crab legs) is excellent. We usually leave a $2 tip. Pizza? no, if I get curbside@outback it's $1-2 in that situation..

She has a point. It's not like you have the option of having a waiter vs not having a waiter.

why yes you do: EAT SOMEWHERE ELSE!

I don't understand why anyone should be tipped, they are already paid to do their job, which is at least minimum wage as required by law. Someone would have to go quite a bit out of their way to get extra money.

That's the business style that you are wanting to go eat out at. You may not agree with it but that is how the place functions and people get paid. You know ahead of going there that the norm is tipping for service yet feel compelled not to do it. Why bother going out to a service establishment at all and not just settle for McDonald's or Wendy's or something like that?

Why do I have to tip? It's not law. It's not required. I'm not going to give someone something for doing nothing extra. All you people tipping for doing nothing extra is ridiculous. Hell I bet you guys still tip even for bad service. They make minimum wage no matter what. What's the difference between what they do compared to a guy at Home Depot loading up the stuff on a cart for you or helping you choose an expensive front door? That's a service establishment as well. If they needed a higher paying job they can go somewhere else. Just because something is the norm doesn't mean you need to do it. The norm was liking President Bush at one time but I still didn't like him. The norm is religion and I don't follow any. Just because it's the norm doesn't mean you have to do it. Oh and it's funny you say go to McDonald's and they like cus they do EXACTLY the same thing.

They get a tip if they do something extra, not what's in their job description.

I hope a waiter shits in your food.

exactly a tip was never about 'extra' it's about getting served. Extra service doesn't require an extra tip, but it's nice.

I have been pretty well rewarded for throwing a few bucks here and there around, esp when I was dating.

The thing is many of the cheap (poor?) people here don't go out enough to notice and would not even be served in a high end establishment...they'd simply be asked to leave.

I am sure there 'five star' story is really a Denny's Diner or a Hard Rock/Planet Hollywood.

It's cool though I need those types of people to work cheap for me. They are so grateful for the scraps I throw them.

You only tip for the service/speed of them bringing it to you, Otherwise of course not, that's like asking should I tip the guy at the corner store when I buy a coke. Do you also feel bad when you don't tip at mcdonald's ?
