meaning you can't make any more than that, would you be happy with that job or would you try to go into something else to start from scratch and hopefully make 300 to 500K 10-20 years down the line?

this is assuming you live in a reasonable cost of living area. A beautiful 3000 sqr foot house here is 350K. I'm not in California where a nice house is 900K

I'm wondering this because I sell cars for a living and I'm never gonna make more than maybe 150 to 190K unless I become a GM and I have no interest in doing that. Even my sales directors make less than me and that job in itself would take maybe 15 years of promotions to get to (no thanks)

edit: I meant to say 10-20 years down the line, not a year down the line

I live 1 hour north of City of LA and you can have all the 2+ acre properties you want for 500k-600k. I predict it will stay that way for 1 more economic downturn.

Hell yeah. I make close to 80k. As much as it would be great to make more, I also have a very good work-life balance with my current job. So I don't really have a reason to try to make more. The only way I can make more is if I move to management. Screw that noise.

I would like to find a way to make more on the side though, but that's more of a backup thing in case I lose my job, would be nice to at least have a gig to fall back on.

Yes. It's totally expected to start at something from scratch with no training and be making 300K+ a year later. If you're running heroin.

You're in sales, so you will never be happy.
I think this is a form of the right question, which is, are you enjoying the job?

Also, do you have a bunch of money saved up, or are you spending it like the baller your humblebrag makes you appear to want to come off as?

Read this douchebags post history, he works in luxury used cars sales. Definitely a sustainable job and Big Baller has had what I assume to be one really good year.

Come back at us in 3yrs and let us know how you graduated to selling mattresses in the mall!

More money comes with it a ton more responsibility. I follow guys like Grant Cardone. If you're really a car saleman you should know Grant. He always states...

*Most people don't know how to make money,
*Fewer know how to keep it.
*And almost no one knows how to multiply it.

Grant's worth about $500m. :)

I'd sit down and figure out the pros and cons to what you want to do. For most, $180k is a lot of money. Then again, it sounds like you aren't like most guys.

Why? If you know how to sell that is a skillset that can make you a lot of money. I've met salepeople who make $150k easy. Year after year. These guys are good. Even in a slow economy they seem to do well.

It just seems like you're jealous. Most people dislike sales people, but we're all being sold to all the time. Movies, the net, music streams (free), etc. We are always being sold something.

1)I can't say I love the job but for the most part, it's very easy to me and there is 100% job security. My GM loves me and will NEVER fire me

there is also minimal brain damage. I'm only responsible for myself, not the rest of the store

2)I balance being frugal and having a great lifestyle. My house is about 90% paid for, I drive a nice Lexus GS that's paid for, I have no debt, I go out all the time, vacation all the time, dress very nice, etc... but I try to keep costs as reasonable as possible. Do I have a ton of liquid cash? not really, maybe 15K in savings and 60K in 401K but I paid my house down very aggressively. In 2 years, my house will be paid completely and I'll be making 15K a month while being able to live on maybe 3500 a month...and 3500 is me living very lavishly

i've been selling cars for 6 years...have never made less than 100K...my worst year was 120. I've made 150+ for 4 years in a row now I wanna say (I can't remember exactly what I made in 2013, may have been 140)

Keep in mind I work at one of the best dealerships in the country and I'm one of the best salesmen in the country.

Do you want more. Do you believe that you can make more money?

my problem is I just don't know what else I can do

For example, business to business sales, I absolutely hate prospecting and cold calling. I barely even make calls at my current job - I have a huge base of customers who love me and they come see me over and over again with me barely doing any follow up. I also take a lot of fresh new business into the store and I close those at a HUGE rate

I don't know what else I can do. This job is so easy to me and requires zero going out of my comfort zone. I can sell cars with my eyes closed.

Yep, but it sounds like your not happy at your income level. Time to make that income work for you.

I want to make 300-500K a year...but I don't want to get out of my comfort zone, I don't want to take any risks

other flipside, because I live in a very reasonable cost of living area, I can have everything I want on 180K a year. In 2 years, I'm gonna have my house paid for and be completely debt free - basically meaning that I can live like a king on 3-4,000 a month while making 15K a month. Me wanting to make 300-500 is more ego than anything

Depends on what you'd be making during those 10-20 years. It might make much more financial sense to continue making $180K and investing a decent portion of that. That is from a financial standpoint but if you find another job that you love doing and don't really care for your current job then it might be a different story.

I'm maxing out my 401K and the rest of my extra cash, I put into my house to pay it off ASAP

I dunno what I'm going to do with all the extra cash once my house is paid for. I don't want to put it into a savings account and grow at a terrible percentage

they really should allow me to put 40-50K a year into a 401K
