On my trip back from Houston while driving through Missouri I hit a bird at approximately 85mph. I stopped to see if it was still stuck on the front end of my car, but I knew there was no way in hell it survived. The speed at which I hit it caused the lower left corner of my license plate to bend at a 45 degree angle.

I sure as hell don't stop suddenly in the middle of the highway and see if whatever I ran over is dead...I'm not that stupid.

agreed. Unless it is very late at night and there is no one else on the road, there is no reason to stop. It is OK to exit and then stop, but stoping on the freeway should be punishable by a quick death. (ie struck by my car)

The reason I am asking is I was on my way back into town this morning I hit something....I was doing a little over 80 when it ran right in front of my passenger side tire....it was pretty big...bigger than an oposum but smaller than a fawn...big enough for the right side of my car to go airborn for a bit...but it was after 4 am and I just wanted to get home....I figure it was a wild billy goat or something

It wasn't a highway but it was still a pretty busy road....

My aunt was driving me and my cousin and she kinda bumped a bird who decided to fly across the front of her car at the same time. It was knocked unconscious (not dead)...and we stopped the car and she tried to find something in her car (like a paper bag or something) so she can pick it up and save it. But she took a while searching in her car...my cousin and I were standing outside of the car making sure no cars were coming...but because the road was so busy...we couldn't really run out and stop any cars who were coming in the bird's lane...so a SUV came...REALLY fast...and crushed the bird before our eyes. I had to turn away and I almost started crying. It was so awful....my aunt is Buddhist so she doesn't believe in killing any living things..and she was pretty shaken up over it b/c she caused that bird's death.

Eek...it was so traumatizing....:(

A better question would be:

If some animal jumps out in front of your car on the highway, do you plow it over or try to swerve?
