If I had to choose right now, I'd choose Lancaster, OH... mainly because that's where I've always lived, and I know it, and its Pros and Cons.

That said, I'd rather not make a selection right now. I'm young enough that I hope to move (once or more) before I turn 30, and figure out exactly where it is that I do want to live long-term.

I like our current city....Fair Oaks, CA. A hidden gem. There's something about the flow of the land and the ecosystem of the river banks in the big city that I love.

I love the Pacific Northwest coast, but couldn't live there as every place is really small until you hit Seattle which is a little too big.

I guess a vineyard outside Napa would be about the only other real option.

Don't know. I don't like the snow in Erie, but I do like the idea of being able to live reasonably close to a shopping district and a job. I grew up about 20 minutes from any kind of commercial or industrial anything. Now I'm only 2 miles from a shopping district, but the traffic noise here sucks, especially with the high concentration of lowbrow dicks with their noisy motorcycles, fartpipes, and stereo systems.
And it's humid enough here that a fish can be out of water for about 5 weeks without noticing that anything's amiss.

I've heard that the air in Colorado is quite dry, which makes it sound nice. And I'd imagine that they would have nice neighborhoods somewhere there, which are near both shopping areas and engineering jobs.

But I've got no idea when I'll be getting an engineering job; I'll probably stay in Erie for a few years until I get some job experience.

I do know where I don't want to live:
- Bible Belt/Tornado Alley (funny how those two seem to go together. God works in mysterious ways. :p)
- Florida, or the Gulf Coast. I really don't much care for a yearly hurricane-sponsored format & reinstall of everything I own.
- Arizona. Doesn't get cold much, but come on, high heat + lots of direct sunlight + reflected sunlight = not much fun either.

No hurricanes in Austin, plus Hill Country is beautiful. I used to live in Dallas but you have to deal with Tornadoes there.

I think I would like all three cities in the poll equally, just none of them as much as Dallas or Austin. I would probably choose Dallas due to family/size but I love Austin as well.

Laguna in Orance County, CA.

That's where I am right now (Santa Ana). It's beautiful and the weather is great but the COL is ridiculous and a lot of people are really snooty (as in, if you don't drive a hybrid and recycle then you are less of a person than I am).

Seven Mile beach. All I'd need is a hurricane proof house.

This. The booze is about half as much too. I went on a cruise and brought back 2 bottles of Grey Goose (1L for $24), Grand Marnier ($25/L), Disaronno ($22/L), Malibu (was $10/L), and Kahlua ($11/L). Plus since I bought so much they gave me 20% off (without asking).

So awesome.

Boston is a shithole.

I'd move to Portland in a heartbeat, though. it's where I grew up and I'd love to move back there if I had an employment opportunity.

I spent a week in downtown Nashville and it does nothing for me. It was pretty dead.

North Carolina is amazing. Great climate, and not super crowded. My dad lives about 15 minutes west of the research triangle, great area.

We're talking about "the rest of your life" so I'm not sure a downtown urban area would be important? I already don't want to go to the fancy bars at 26, I sure as hell wont when I'm 46. Nashville has pro football, pro hockey, and minor league baseball, plenty of small bars, and plenty of music (unfortunately mostly country). Oh, and there is at least one great strip club.

New Jersey.

Every season, every scene, every type of topography(ocean, mountains, valleys, plains, forests), no natural disasters, some of the best schools and universities (Princeton and Rutgers), diversity, many cities for job opportunities, high salaries (I believe 2 or 3 of the top 5 richest counties in the US), decent statewide public transport, close to NYC AND Philly, (I can go on all day.)

stop, stop... we don't like anyone else in the US to know that there's more to the state than what they see while driving on the turnpike ;)

Denver is a great place to store people, keeps them out of nicer places. It does have the best Indian restaurant I've ever eaten at but other than that it really isn't much but a really big mess of sprawl from Ft Collins to Colorado Springs.

Portland = Cincinnati + pine trees

Does it have to be in the US?

After visiting Ireland I'm awfully fond of it. Might also like to give New Zealand a try.

If it has to be in the US then I'd choose a wilderness area of Alaska, or Washington.

I already live here! Nashville.

I live about 30 minutes outside of Nashville near the lake. We have great shopping and a small town feel, but I drive in to Nashville every day for work. So I get the peace and quite of the lake, but the city feel when I'm there.

The people are very nice in Nashville. We have 4 seasons and overall the weather is generally nice. We have pro sports teams. It's not a huge city, but it's a city with a small town feel. The cost of living is decent.

Boston!

Lived in Portland, SUCKED!

Viusited Boston twice, once in the fall and once in the Spring. Awesome city!

Portland rains way too much and I think Portland lacks intelligence & sophistication!

I added my 3 favorite cities in the poll for excitement. I also enjoy Nashville and Austin, but the former is just for country music (the girls are eh), and the latter is too hot, so I include these three.
