I live in a rural area. I used to live in a small city. The reasons I hated living in the small city would be magnified ten-fold in a larger city. Of course, in the small city, I could and did walk to restaurants, bars, etc. - all those things that people find wonderful in the city. In the rural area, I get in my car (what a fantastic invention) and drive to those places if I want to go there. Then, when I'm done enjoying those over-rated excuses people make for city-living to be better, I can drive back to my rural area, sit out on the patio or front porch, enjoy all the stars, enjoy the sounds of crickets, peepers, the occasional coyote howl in the distance, and every once in a while, the faint clip clop clip clop of a horse pulling an Amish buggy down a road a mile away. Yes, I can hear traffic a mile to 2 miles away - it's that quiet and peaceful. That's why people from the city have camps near me that they visit every weekend - to have a nice quiet, peaceful place to relax. Come to think of it, I think I'll go for a walk through the woods now & see if I can shoot some cute furry woodland creatures for dinner. (Or, maybe a turkey.) I guess if you don't like the outdoors, then the city is the place to be. If that's the case though, why do cities have parks?

If everyone lived in the country side there would be nowhere peaceful left.

Great point. What I meant to say is "the cities are great! It sucks out here in the country. Coyotes come prowling at night, trying to eat your babies. The Amish in my area are horrible. Their horses crap all over the roads & we don't have street cleaners to come clean it up. Keep away from the country! Never leave the city!

I used to go shooting about twice a month in TN. It was $4 an hour at a small little place where I was usually the only one and never got hassled or bothered, and the workers were as friendly as could be. Here in IL, it's $25 and 90 minutes away to go shooting at a highly overcrowded commercial range with a idiots mixed in with knowledgeable people on the line.

:) I can sit out on the back patio, have a beer, and shoot a hundred rounds. Which reminds me; I have to make my son clean up all the cans with holes in them that he shot in the back yard with the 22.

Never lived anywhere but decent sized east coast cities...

Albany was a shithole (fun one tho for sure), Boston is cool too, but after 5 years here I'm itching to get out and see more...

Out of the three in your pohl, I'd have to choose Portland, Oregon, however there are other places that I'd prefer much more
(Portland is the only one of the three that doesn't regularly get an ass-load of snow...and I HATE snow)

Gimme someplace warm and tropical where I can walk to the ocean.

I like having the mountains, ocean and city close by. also like the changing seasons. if I had to move i liked the bay area, ca. or maybe austin, tx.

Out of the three options I choose Boston. However, if I ever make enough money to purchase an estate I'll either move to Spain or Argentina OR build a compound in the quiet hills of Vermont.

Of the big cities I prefer Chicago, assuming I'd have enough money to live near the lake.

Overall, I'm living right where I want to live. I just wish about 900k of the million other people who live here would move to Denver or Portland or anywhere that isn't here.

I love that area with the redwood trees all around.

Grand Caymans

No crime, no unemployment, no income taxes.
No job man, you steal sometin' man, get off the fuck'n island. (Direct quote of a tour guide)

Seven Mile beach. All I'd need is a hurricane proof house.

Yeah all the good Cities in the US are left off.

No Austin? wow
No Miami... ok
What about north or south carolina?

Yeah I like Nashville also, so it should be on there, but Boston is only cool for white people (and I really do mean that). Also you can take your love for the cold out of the equation because each city in your list is dead last in mine.

North Carolina towns worth living in? Columbia, Franklin, maybe Murphy or Edenton. Worth living in in a trailer you can haul off ahead of a hurricane? Buxton.

I spent a week in downtown Nashville and it does nothing for me. It was pretty dead.

I was in Asheville a few years ago during the summer (students gone) and downtown was a ghost town with a few goths hanging out but otherwise not much happening. Maybe it picks up during the school year. There were a couple of nice galleries but not enough to form a real arts district.

yeah, it's not the greatest place for night life. belle chere in the summer's pretty cool. reminds me of an east coast Colorado. with all the hippies, art and outdoor stuff to do. it's the place i go to "get away".

I haven't traveled a whole lot, but I love my home town, Tauranga, NZ. Better than the shit-hole Christchurch where I'm living at the moment.
